MacBook HDMI to TV has no sound

I can connect my tv to my macbook pro through a HDMI cable and the picture shows up perfectly. However, the sound goes through my laptop speakers and not through the tv. When I go into Preferences --> sound --> output, there is not option to select for the hdmi, just the internal speakers. How can I get the sound to go through the tv instead?

It also works if you press Option key with the volume button on the keyboard or you can go into the System Prefs and change the sound output preference. Disconnecting the HDMI cable returns the setting to default.

After searching forever, this is what helped me after many days of being frustrated.

I have:

2011 Macbook Pro

3 week old Vizio 42" smart HDTV

15" HDMI to Thunderbolt cable off Amazon.

First the obvious:

System Pref - Display - Mirror, etc

Then in System Pref - Sound - Sound Effects, make sure that "Play sound effects through" is clicked on your tv. This didn't change until I went in and did it. This is what made it work for my tv. Then the obvious Output - HDMI.

Also go into Apps - Utilities - Audio MIDI setup, and make sure the HDMI is selected.

Hey, I tried setting up the audio and it didn't work until I did some fiddlin around. So when you plug in the hdmi to your tv, in System Preferences>Displays, you should find you tv in that category. Now, open Utilities>Audio HDMI Setup. Bottom right hand corner, click the + button and select Create New Multi-Output Device. Now a new catagory called Multi-Output Device should appear. Click it, select HDMI and check off the box and there you go.

After I contacting Apple Support I was able to see "HDMI as an option for TV" by

SMC reset instructions:

1. Shut down the computer.

2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter (The charger) to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

NOTE: Option is labeled as 'Alt' on some models

4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. (The device should not power on at this point.)

5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

- How do I know this was done correctly?

- You must hit the power button on its own after you release the buttons from step 4 to power on.

- Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

This worked for me.

http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-the-Sound-on-a-Mac-Computer

Open the Activity Monitor and stop the "coreaudiod" process. This will restart the sound controller for the Mac:[2]

  • Open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder.
  • Find the "coreaudiod" process in the list. Click the "Process Name" header to sort the list alphabetically.
  • Click the the "Quit Process" button. After confirming, coreaudiod will be closed and will restart automatically.

Turn your Mac off. Resetting the parameter RAM (PRAM) can fix a variety of problems related to volume control and sound output. This will reset a few settings but will not delete any of your data.

I have a thunderbolt adapter and hdmi cord and my computer displays on the TV but not the audio. What cord do i use to connect my vizio TV (at least 5 years old) to my new macbook pro retina?

I used just an HDMI cord from my TV to my laptop and i still have no sound. I even tried an audio cord that goes from my computer to the L and R audio on the TV.

Any other suggestions? I have also gone to utilities> Audio MDI setup> and tried to alter the input output format but still no sound. Also tried the TV settings, still no luck.

Is there an audio cord that connects to the TV that would work so I dont have to listen through computer speakers

I have a 2011 13" MacBook Pro and I can't even get my TV to show up, so none of the options above work.

Does anyone know why the TV wouldn't even show up, I've tried it on two TV's and although I get the mirror display of my MacBook, I just can't get sound...

Please someone help...

I have Toshiba and or John Lewis TV, both of which are not that old...

I am using a gold HDMI lead with an adapter

So frustrated now.

Go to System Preferences --> Sound --> Output --> Click On The Tv Output. For me I plugged my hdmi from my Macbook Pro to my Samsung Tv. As soon as I clicked on the tv it did not appear as nothing happened. But no sound will come from your laptop but will transfer sound to the tv. Test the sound by playing music to make sure it works.
