My system is too old for Mountain Lion, can I still get OS X 10.7?

I took my macbook to get upgraded a while back and was specifically told by the employees at the apple store to wait for Mountain Lion to come out rather than buy Lion, then later have to buy Mountain Lion (so a 20 dollar charge instead of a 50). That sounded great to me and they had just been messing with my macbook so I assumed they were correct about me being able to get Mountain Lion. Not the case, I can't get Mountain Lion but I still want to get Lion and it is no longer available in the app store. So don't tell us to "take responsibility for our own actions" when we've been told false information by Apple employees. I'm calling apple today to get it downloaded so it doesn't really matter, but I mean really that was just an idiotic thing to post.

Apple provides detailed information regarding which models Mt. Lion will work on at their website. Employees make mistakes, so I stand by what I said... "check the Apple website for your particular Mac!"

I'm glad you were able to get Lion.

I do feel Apple made a big mistake taking Lion off the App Store.

10.7 is still showing as a download option for me from a 10.6.8 system which I am now ready to upgrade and as far as I can tell is not supported by 10.8. But then I bought 10.7 through the App Store - so it may be showing simply because it is in my list of already purchased software.

Last I heard if you call the Apple Store online for help they can direct you to a download for Lion. I went a bit of a different direction. I have a newer 2011 Mabbook Pro but really have never liked Mountain Lion. I also purchased Lion and found after ML was released my Lion download link went away in my purchased apps. Luckily my Macbook Pro has the internet option to re install the original OS. So I was able to manually save my files and re install Lion through Apple's internet restore option. Personal opinion here coming from a long time Mac user. I think Apple's opertating systems one way path upgrades are not user correct. I think the ability to downgrade if needed should be way more simpler then it is. Apple does not even address this issue and makes no real attempt at explaining how to go about it. Users must either use a backup copy or must find another option on their own.

Anyway end of rant, I just am glade to be back on Lion and do not intend to accept Mountain Lion anytime soon.

That appears to be the 10.6.8 update to Snow Leopard; SL needs to be installed first, but the OP is looking for Lion (10.7) - he's already using 10.6.8. In any case, Lion is a paid upgrade to Snow Leopard and cnet wouldn't be giving it away free.

Today I bought a brand new MacBook Pro and I was surprised how well ML works. I still own a well running Mac Pro Dual Core 2,66 GHZ Version 1.1 on 10.6.8 This Mac Pro from 2006 is still fast and supports me well in composing in Logic Pro with a lot of softwareinstruments etc. I am a prfessional composer and use this mac pro many hours a day- and it is still great - runnig without any flaws or hips...

Anyway I wanted to upgrade from logic 8 now to logc 9 now.

Logic 9 starts to make sense only with OSX 10.7 or higher because 64 bit adresses more RAM for sample instruments.

First schock.

Mountain Lion wont support a machine that is still very potent and only 6 years old and is still running great without any problems. There is no reason to me to buy a new mac-pro becasue this one is still working FINE and FAST!! Its still faster vs. my new mac book pro.

Second schock.

So it was also my aim to go now at least up to 10.7. OSX.

But 10.07 ist not avaible in the app store or on the website.....

Apple why do you stop supporting still great machines?

The new macbook is great .... well done ML is dream.

But I am not in the businnes to thorw away a good mac pro becasue apple stops to support it?

So far I am using macs since over 12 years by now and never had a bad support expereince.

But for now this makes me feel bad the first time about apple .....😕

It doesent makes sense, at least to me, to build hardware like tank that lives long and still is very fast. Till the day a manger says stop to support those "old" computers....😐

Apple isn't here, but your machine doesn't have the correct EFI to allow Mountain Lion to run.

Call AppleCare and they will tell you how you can purchase Lion.

This is what helped me get OSX 10.7.5 Lion: Called Apple and in 3 days I got it, by a Digital download.

Lion and Mountain Lion will cost the same. Your Mac Pro as long as it has 2 GB of RAM or greater can run Mountain Lion. So you can just download it from the App Store.

If you insist on Lion, you will have to convince Apple with a phone call that you need a key to download Lion and then purchase it and download and install that from the App Store.

To add to Allan's advice, you call Apple Sales for your country and order it like he advised. USA toll free number is 1-800-MY-APPLE (800-692-7753).

You can still get Lion. You can call the phone sales reps at Apple, they can sell you a code. I see fritzer said the same. He is correct (at least for the US store, I see you are showing as in Germany).

OS X Lion system requirements

To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:

• An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
• Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro Running Snow Leopard. I can't run Mountain Lion, but I was able to order a DVD of Lion from Apple by calling (800-692-7753). They are not offering a download anymore. They are sending me a DVD. In any case, that seems to be the only solution. Apple was pretty helpful on the phone.

As of today (June 28, 2013) I was able to get 10.7 for $19.99 by calling the Apple main store and asking for it. They said that they will send a link to download it. They said that they took it off of the App Store because too many people were mistakenly buying it when they really wanted 10.8. Before taking my order, they wanted to confirm that I had Snow Leopard and really couldn't go to 10.8.

I bought 10.7.3 in April 2012. My hard drive crashed, so I wanted to get the software again. And ol'White MacBook will not run 10.8, keep in mind.

The website says I can redownload for free if it is still available.

Tech Support says it is available if I pay for it.

If it is available, why am I paying for it again? It's either available or it is not available.

I used to think Apple is God. Was this runaround Steve's idea, or is this "The New Apple"?

In order to download from the Mac App Store, you need Snow Leopard. That was the last Mac OS to come out on a disk. Do you still have that and have you reinstalled it?

Once you have updated your SL, you will have the Mac App Store where you can download Lion again (if purchase in the Mac App store) using your Apple ID registered to that computer and store.
