Safari 6.0 RSS Help

What happend to my RSS feeds? Safari 6.0 wants to put them in mail, which is the last place I want my feeds to appear. Also, there is no more RSS button in the window... how do I bookmark a RSS feed?

This is a standard Apple strategy. RSS is old, stable, and boring. Apple is switching to notifications. There is a new Notifications preference pane so that web sites can send notifications directly to Safari. RSS is clunky. It takes one or two hours between updates and it uses an inefficent polling process. It is much more efficient for web sites to be able to push notifications directly to Safari. Transitions are a bit painful but things will be much better in the future.

If you keep pushing your software like this, I'm going to report you for abuse.

In fact, I see that you're posting the same thing in both RSS-related discussions, so it's spam in both senses of the word: repetitive posting and commercial promotion.

Two questions:

1- I'm from Portugal and AppStore wont let me download "EtreFeed"... where/how can i download de App ?

It isn't available for anyone in the App Store. I submitted it within 24 hours of Apple's notice that Mountain Lion submissions are ready, but it is still waiting for review. The Apple review team seems to have gotten behind with the sandbox changes and Mountain Lion. It is a problem for all developers.

For the time being, you will have to download it directly from my web site.

2- I like the ideia of the notifications ( bla bla bla ) but is it currently operational?

Sure, in Mountain Lion. It is not something that is meant to demand people's time. It runs in the background and posts notifications when new RSS feed articles get posted. When you click on the notification, it will open the web site directly in your browser. Ideally, you'll rarely see the EtreFeed window. One person has already proclaimed it ugly 🙂. It is designed to be useful rather than beautiful.

Right back atchya! Funny how you complain more when I defend Apple than when I am blatantly marketing software 🙂. I have my disclaimer and I think people will find EtreFeed useful.

I just sent Apple the feedback below through this form:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html

I am hardly able to control my anger. Why (...) did you remove RSS support from Safari 6!? What (...) took that decision?! I have the Bookmarks Bar full of feeds and it was super convenient to quickly see the number of new articles there. A real killer feature.

I am not even going to use Safari anymore now. We are over! Also, I will not be updating to Mountain Lion because who knows what else you (...) there and failed to mention.

Thanks for the link, but it is not exactly what we had. The convienience of seeing RSS feeds incremented under tabs is what we now miss.

Several takeaways:

Why, oh why are we so quick to download the updates? Never again.

If you own a PC, and I do, a not so bad quad-core machine (only for the chess programs Fritz, Rybka and Houdini that are not on OSX), then you can recover by using S. on the PC. Some speculation has it A. is going to abandon S. for Windows, so we may be safe with our beloved RSS increments there.

I am debating whether to try to cancel the Retina Display machine. I am really overdue, my 2006 vintage machine will not even take ML, and I also hate using the PC more than I have to, but I am so upset.

A few things mess me up about the removal of RSS from Safari:

I had dozens of my favourite feeds bookmarked in a folder on my bookmarks bar, so I could see the 'unread count'. The unread count number is gone.

After updating Safari but before installing Mountain Lion, I was at least able to see the feeds in Mail, although I have never until yesterday used Mail for RSS because I thought it was the stupidest, most disorganized place to want to read feeds.

After updating to Mountain Lion, an attempt to read RSS feeds resulted in a notice to install a 3rd-party RSS reader. Which one? Apple doesn't even provide their recommendation for a suitable replacement.

The available RSS readers don't integrate well. Web-based Google reader? Tried it - ugly and confusing.

Spotlight used to pick up on RSS feeds when searched for, but none of the clients integrate with spotlight.

Many existing 3rd-party RSS readers have stupid sounding names, and the ones with decent names are the most useless to use.

If Apple is dropping support for RSS, why oh WHY is there an RSS feed button at the top of this page below the Thread title? Apple should remove all RSS from every one of the websites/webpages they host. If you won't stand behind it, don't pretend to use it.
