Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Nope. Not buying this limitation Apple. OK, so I get that you think we all need GPU hardware H.264 encoding to make this go, but as many have already said, Air Parrot is doing it. So, at least for desktop machines (see below), there is absolutely no valid reason to not have this ML feature enabled on a broader scope of "older" platforms. I'm running a mid-2009 iMac with a quad-core i7 clocking at 2.8 GHz. Be glad to let one of those cores that is sitting mostly idle take the load for mirroring.

(Why not non-H.264 GPU enabled MacBooks? Should be users choice, but the load on those machines is going to make them warm up pretty good and put a pretty good draw on the battery. But again, should be users choice.)

As suspected ML has a fair few issues that are slowly being shaken out. Battery issues, drag and drop, sleep issues and overheating problems. These combined, with the Airplay fiasco, means that Apple should be looking to issue an update fairly soon. I've advised several users not to upgrade yet, as ML isn't delivering all it's promise yet. As with all upgrades it pays not be first. Mind you, the lack of Airplay on such a huge swathe of Apple laptops and desktops with this upgrade, when there is a workaround, has used up a lot of good faith and trust. This action implies that just under the skin, there is a MS gremlin lurking.

I can't believe how many posts ther are about this subject. If Apple doesn't react to this huge number of unsatisfied customers, it could be the beginning of the end for Apple. I don't really care about the $20 for ML. It has some pretty nice features and my early 2009 Mac Pro runs a bit faster. What really gets me though is the fact that the most important new feature that obviously thousands of people were looking forward to is not backward compatible. The most important reason why I was converted to Mac was that I thought these computers wouldn't grow old. At least, not after only 2 or 3 years or that we would be able to easily expand. My Mac Pro is still an extremely powerful machine but for some unexplained reason, the Mirroring feature doesn't work. Apple cannot ignore this. We are loyal Apple customers, we've all spent a lot of money and we believe Apple should offer us a solution. Apple always says "it just works". Well this one doesn't. Please fix it. I still believe in Apple but I am very disappointed. What good is Apple TV without mirroring. Cheers.
