Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Never mind. Just realized my iMac is too old. Late 2009.

AirPlay will only work for mid 2011. 😟

Okay on the phone with apple care now re: my mid2010iMac with no AirPlay Mirroring capability and no HDMI port as an OBVIOUS means to connect. Mid 2011 and later models DO have HDMI ports. The rep said there are some third party programs you could buy but NOTHING APPLE PROVIDES THAT CAME WITH THE CAPABILITIES OF MY COMPUTER ,A--WIPE!

I paid $30 for FireCore jailbreak (which they said was legal). I never got it to work and I'm done with 3rd Party.

So look in the mirroe before you say someone else doesn't know what they're talking about!

For the love of God why would you be that irritated? Intel introduced QuickSync with their newer chips. Hardware manufacturers customized their systems by writing code between Windows and the chipset to allow OTA mirroring. If you had a PC with chipsets prior to that, that did not have Quicksync, then you did not get that feature. And even if you upgraded to Windows 7 or Windows 8 you still did not get that feature.

If you sell all your Apple gear and buy all PC gear, and then whoever you buy from (let's say HP) releases a newer model with a new Intel chipset, say an upgrade to Quicksync that allows OTA 3D, and your model will not run it, and there is a Windows update that still won't let you run it (because it is a HARDWARE upgrade) are you going to sell all your PC gear?

Well I don't BUILD COMPUTERS for a living, but I do know you can often buy or update hardware chipsets in Windows based models. That isn't an option with my Mac. I'll just have to buy a new computer to have the new "chipsets". I asked on the helpline number about that too.

I'm not an IT nerd and don't pretend to be but I do spend about 6 hours a day on the computer and I'm always looking for a better but EASY mousetrap. I don't want to have to jury-rig something for it to work. The one time I tried that with Fire Core because I really wanted to stream from my Mac to my ATV, at the very least, I got burned.

If I keep hearing more good than bad about Air Parrot I may give it a try since it looks like it's only $10. That doesn't sting as much as a $30 product that doesn't work, which had good reviews on CNET one week. Boy were they wrong on that one!
