Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Never mind. Just realized my iMac is too old. Late 2009.

AirPlay will only work for mid 2011. 😟

Yes they did. I read it and refused to do the upgrade as a result. I bought my mid-2010 quad-core iMac 13 months ago. It was still a pretty penny on sale. What I was DEFINITELY not told then was how soon my computer would be obsolete and incompatible with future upgrades.

At least you can usually keep putting new windows upgrades on your laptop or PC for MANY years before your equipment is obsolete.

THAT'S why a newly-converted Apple user like me is going back to Windows on future purchases.

If you had a 2010 PC running the same Intel chipset you have now and you upgraded it to Windows 7 (or 8) you would NOT be able to mirror your display to your television as this is a hardware feature. So what is the difference? Will you comment on the Dell, HP, Toshiba or Asus site when a new version of Windows comes out and you don't have a hardware feature that a newer model of your computer has?

HERE HERE! You are dead on! I did all the work I had to do to figure out the computer I bought the end of 2011 was in fact a mid-2010 build. I had to look at the system information then go to the website and figure it out.

It should be as simple as a "Q4","I3", "I5", etc., included in your iMac label imprinted clearly on the shell so it's easy for ANY LAYPERSON to find.

Thanks davidav for that comment. Plus, my 27" iMac is a little cumbersome to drag into the living room to connect. My iPad2 doesn't have an HDMI plug and the converter is spotty and I'm still often SOL because of no Flash. Many signals are blocked and the airplay mirroring on the iPad, as a result of no Flash, is often less than satisfactory unless you want to buy everything on the "derApple Schtore".

Thankfully my laptop is windows-based and I can stream just about anything.
