Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Never mind. Just realized my iMac is too old. Late 2009.

AirPlay will only work for mid 2011. 😟

azaben, try AirParrot.

What I had to do was disconnect virtually everything from my wifi network to get my Macbook Pro screen to appear on my TV ... I shut off wifi on several other computers and phones. When I did that, I got it to work through AirParrot. Apparently my router was just overwhelmed with the number of devices and could not support mirroring until virtually everything was off except one Apple TV and my Macbook.

I had to disconnect my other Apple TV too.

Too many things running off one router seemed to be the problem. However, when I did finally get it to work, it was laggy and not really worth it. I could not see using it much with the way it performed, even with everything else off the network.

Oh boy, after reading several dozens of discussion pages and blog postings I am totaly frustrated with Airplay. This is soo weired, ok here we go:

- got a late 2011 Mac (should be supported as Apple says)

- got a brand new Apple TV 3 (updated to 5.2 yesterday)

- AirportExtreme (I have too many Apple devices, I think)

- I can stream video from my iPhone, my iPad, **** I can even stream videos from my iTunes on my Mac

BUT:

- there is no Airplay Icon, it also says no devices detected in the display settings.

What did I try already:

- restartet everything

- switched WIFI (from normal to 5Ghz and back)

- put the Apple TV to ethernet

- turned of all Firewalls

BUT:

- there is still no Airplay Icon, it also says no devices detected in the display settings.

I am really frustrated here. I thought when sticking to apple devices only I would NEVER have to deal with these problems ever again.

Anyone any idea I might oversee? Is there a way to do some port checking (I already ran nmap, but everything seems reachable)?

Any help appreciated!

I have an older Mac and Apple TV. I downloaded and installed AirParrot, turned on the TV, clicked on the AirParrot icon to open. Next you go to the icon AirParrot in the menu bar at the top and click on Apple TV and on enable audio. Hey presto you computer screen is now on your TV.

I hope that helps some folk out there who can't seem to make it work.

AirParrot only cost a very little, about $9.

didn't do your due diligence??? This post has been around for a while and it is interesting to see how writers over time have missed the point. It should be remembered that Apple have since amended the amount/kind of information that they have chosen to make available to the owners or potential customers since the first post. Basically, I am saying that since my post, apple have chosen to provide some additional info and in a manner that may still not be suffice to a majority of us. Has it been enough? If not, why not? To some it is enough. I lead a busy life of which is not entirely immersed within this type of technology. Therefore, if this product requires more of my attention to meet Apple's due diligence requirements, then perhaps it is not for me.

It's about truth in advertising... Mountain Lion can do airplay mirroring! And Mountain Lion can do this! And it can do this! It's so cool!

The average consumer... which is many of us..... is not going to read lots of things before buying a software update because the advertised wonders of this new shiny product sound so darned good. Come on, it's only $19.95.... what have you got to lose! Well, it not only substantially slows down both of my Macs, it also doesn't perform as advertised. When a product is advertised as performing certain wonderful things, the consumer should not have have to read pages of fine print to find out their two year old computer is too old to measure up to this update. After all, Apple keeps bugging us about it and we know it's only a matter of time before things stop working because we don't have this update.

Yes, Apple has been doing this since the dawn of time. That doesn't make it right.

At the very least, they should include this addition to their page of wonderous claims for Mountain Lion: "This may or may not work on your computer and if it doesn't, you will need to buy some extra stuff to get it to work. Air Parrot, which may or may not work, will set you back $10... and then you might just have to buy a new computer if that doesn't work. Good luck." I'd like to see similar disclaimers on all software updates.

(Itunes 11 for instance should come with an apology. "Sorry we really effed it up this time, but won't you please update now?"

Due diligence is for buying cars... not cheap software updates.

Hi, I've tried your trial version of AirParrot, but in the 20 minutes of free trial I couldn't get my DVD (in the optical drive of my iMac) performing the movie on my Apple TV. All I could see was an empty display... How can I get a DVD running on my Apple TV (and how do I stop it for being shown on my iMac)?

You know that AirParrot is not an Apple product, right?

I wonder if anyone can help with my particular AirParrot problem. It was working just fine until last night when a new download to Apple TV was interrupted accidentally. Now AirParrot can't see Apple TV at all. I've tried removing and replacing AirParrot from my computer but it didn't make any difference. Any help out there?

Many Thanks.
