Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Never mind. Just realized my iMac is too old. Late 2009.

AirPlay will only work for mid 2011. 😟

Enable the feature even if it requires a free update. that would make me satisfied. Airparrot can make it work so sure as **** apple could come up with something. You have a tick box under display settings, So let people choose whether to have it on or off so that those who are using macbooks and have a battery draining issue, can turn it off to save the battery the choice would be theirs.

When I buy a product I want to get exactly what is being described not 80% 90% 95%or even 99%

When I buy a car I want exactly what they are selling me. Not with bits missing or not working. You select your car based on its features as a whole, Not just the fact that it has the engine you need and the wheels and seats you need. So it is with this product.

Dont forget this was an UPGRADE i.e. additional features. I have to say that mirroring is what swayed it for me.

Would I have upgraded otherwise? Possibly at some time but not definitely. and hence I wont be going through the hassle of a refund. But surely have the right to complain about dony I?

If you have read through here you do understand that the feature in Mountain Lion (along with Sony, Toshiba, Windows, etc.) is a HARDWARE feature. So how would Apple enable it on your machine if it does not have the required hardware.

You do realize that you were licensing an OPERATIING SYSTEM upgrade, not a piece of software. I could understand your anger if Apple had put software in the Mac App Store that said "Mac Airplay Mirroring: $19.95" and did not have the disclaimer. But that is not what this is. You do realize there are several other features in Mountain Lion that do not work on your iMac? And some that do but do not work on earlier iMacs. And the same thing happens with Windows, some features are always hardware dependent.

And this site is for technical support but the moderators gave some leeway for this topic.

I guarantee you in the next OS X upgrade there will be even more features that will not work on your iMac. It will never be 100%. So just save your money and pass up any upgrades.

DO YOU WORK FOR APPLE?

I still have open in another tab the apple tv page as I gave you earlier. Then I have opened your apple TV link in another tab and GUESS WHAT it is now different. This is absolutely outrageous and I am going to take a screen shot of the 2 pages as proof.

I think I might take this further because there is deffinitely some skullduggery going on here.

Yes, they are different. So what? They convey the same basic information.

How about this: Call Apple Customer Relations and tell them how unhappy you are. Get them to refund your money for Mountain Lion and the Apple TV then take your iMac, a backup of your data, and your Apple TV to your nearest Apple Store. They will take back the ATV and can clear Mountain Lion from your machine, reinstall Lion (assuming that is what you were using prior to ML), and load your backup. You go home and have your money returned and your computer just like it was before you updated.

Then everyone is satisfied.

I have a great life thanks. Thats the apple way, belittle the problem and hope that everyone just goes away with theirs tail between their legs. Rather than address a ligitimate problem and resolve the issue.

So you are saying that because it says something different on an AU site that it doesnt matter. Apple is global and has global responsibilities. By the way I am from CA but live in Australia.

Mar 6, 2013 7:53 PM in response to applesceptic

There is no problem here to belittle. There is no way to "resolve" it.

Apple included probably less than 10 lines of code in Mountain Lion that switches on Quicksync from Intel with computers equipped with that chipset. Your computer does not have that chipset. What is the problem?

For those that need mirroring AirParrot and one other software product (I forget the name right now) are available for machines that do not have Quicksync. Same is true for Windows. Apple cannot just right AirParrot into their code or release it as their product. They would be sued.

The information is pretty much the same in both articles and they probably differ in England, Germany, etc. So yes I am saying it doesn't matter.

I dont really care about technical abilities of the computer. I care about it being made PERFECTLY clear both from the ML blurb and the apple tv blurb that you have to have at least a mid 2011 mac and mountain lion for mirroring to work.

Of course I know you cant just copy Airparrot, I am not suggesting that. But if you are as technically savy as you seem to be then you surely know there is more than one way to skin a cat.

How many wordprocessing programes are there that acheive exactly the same thing but have very different coding.

Dont b u l l s h i t me that it cant be done. It can.

Articles being pretty much the same is not being the same.

Ah but what the ****. who cares about people outside the US right?

Mar 6, 2013 8:11 PM in response to applesceptic

You're not listening.

Apple is leveraging a HARDWARE FEATURE to provide Airplay Mirroring. Using the Intel-provided hardware gives the advantages I mentioned previously (smoother performance, low CPU use, good battery life). This hardware IS NOT PRESENT on older systems.

Apple took a new Intel technology and leveraged it to come out with a nice new feature in Mountain Lion on newer systems. It is substantially more effort to develop a parallel, worse-performing software-based solution only to support systems that are older.

This is going nowhere; you're not listening and you insist on berating a number of other folks in the thread. Given there are > 1000 posts in this thread, there's nothing more to be said that hasn't already been said.

Mar 6, 2013 8:12 PM in response to applesceptic

Sorry if you don't care about the technical side but that doesn't change anything. It is a hardware issue. And your word processing analogy is not valid.

Apple just used the Quicksync feature made available by Intel and called it AirPlay Mirroring. That is it. And they made that available to the people who have the hardware. I guess you would have been happier if they had said they would not make that availble to anyone so you would be happy.

And it doesn't have anything to do with where anyone is located.

Mar 6, 2013 8:22 PM in response to William Lloyd

You are missing the point. The point is that you dont get mirroring that was promised. I dont care how it is done. Dont offer what cant be provided for what ever reason without detailing exactly what machines it will work on.

Now having discovered that there appears to be minor differences in US and AUS sites the problem may not actually exist as far as Apples claims for mirroring on the US site. But as far as it appears on the AUS site there is definitely a problem because neither the ML blurb at release or the apple tv blurb as it is at this moment tell you that if you had a mid 2010 Mac that mirroring wouldnt work.

But like I said maybe we dont matter to apple on this side of the world.

Mar 6, 2013 8:32 PM in response to applesceptic

No, you weren't promised it. If you have the hardware that supports it then you have it. You weren't promised Power Nap either. If you have the hardware that supports it then you have it, if not then you don't.

Apple did not market Mountain Lion as a mirroring application in any site anywhere in the world. It was just one item included in the upgraded OS IF you had the hardware that could access and use it. And it was detailed.

I've given you some options you can take. We have heard your complaints. Nothing is going to change. Move on.
