Java SE 6 Runtime unavailable on Mountain Lion

Merci 🙂 et desolee pour la reponse tardive. Je vais essayer d'installer Java 7 et puis ensuite de suivre la procedure MAC pour le desinstaller et retourner à Java 6... c'est vraiment d'une simplicite! Heureusement que j'ai aussi Windows 7 sur mon Mac, pour continuer à utiliser les programmes dont j'ai besoin... un comble 🙂

J'ai essaye le lien et d'installer Java 7, puis toute la serie de commandes Apple pour retourmer à Java 6 and guess what, it does not work, sigh!

Actually when i run Java -version, I continue to get that there is no java installed etc...

Opened Terminal and typed "java". OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion automatically opened a dialog to install Java 6.

Couple of updates:

At terminal: java -version will only update properly if all of your browser windows are closed.

If you want to manually download:

Perhaps you never had Java 6 installed? With Lion and above it was is an optional install. Try AppleJason's links to install it manually, then go through the commands to retourn to Java 6.

I have OS X 10.8.2

java -version gives 1.7.0_15

Still, when I try to start CS5 programs or try to open java preferences, it says "You need to install java SE 6...."

What to do?

You will have to either install Java SE 6 or pester Adobe until they update their software.

I believe I read somewhere that it's only a minor component of CS5 that needs Java and you can live without it. I suggest you check that out in Adobe's discussion area or search around / start a new thread here in the ACS forum.

I had the same problem with Photoshop CS5.

This one solved my problem:

Photoshop CS 5 is up and running on Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Again, that will work as long as you had Java SE 6 installed to begin with. I believe there is also a way to remove the minor component that requires Java, but don't recall what that is.

I had tried Oracle's latest version first (installed today), but the one from MacUpdate was the only one that worked (installed over the Oracle download).

"SE 6 install" had told me before: "You have a newer version already installed", refusing to install, so it wasn't SE 6.

A friend who had the same problem told me it worked for her, too ( I mean the installation one I sent the MacUpdate link of).

Same problem there: no Photoshop startup, no "SoftwareUpdate" install possible.

Well, sort of. The two versions actually install in totally different places, so you still have both, but obviously there can only be one browser plug-in and you can see which version that is here How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? You do realize that the update you provided actually comes from Apple and not from MacUpdate, don't you? MacUpdate almost always redirects you to the developer site with it's "Download Now". If you watch the address bar when you click on it you will see it go to Apple before the download starts. And if you do a "Get Info" on the downloaded file you can see exactly where it came from in the "More Info:" section.

And, as I said before, it will only install on a system that already has Java 6.
