I just upgraded to Safari 6 on Lion. So far, not so good. Anyone know how I can revert back to 5?
Thanks!
Best of luck - I tried 6, slowed my machine to a crawl, pages took 5 times longer to load. Used a clone drive from a week ago to revert to 5 and then Safari wouldn't load at all, everything else was fine. I guess it changed bookmarks etc to 6 and then they wouldn't load in 5, not a happy bunny.
I grabbed the Safari 5.1.7 app file from a Time Machine backup and even though it does not let me replace 6 in the Applications folder, I just placed it somewhere else and I'm able to run it fine. Everything I've tested works (webpages, bookmarks, and most importantly the normal sized tabs).
will complete erase and re-install of lion from a flash drive get rid of safari 6?
Help! 5.1.7 installer won't overwrite latest version, and I want to revert back to 5.1.7 - which incidently isn't even available to download anymore on the website.
Help!! 😢
hi,
this is what i had to do to get back to 5.1.7 first hope that u have a back up on an external hard drive that has a low version of safari. i did a clean erase of HD then recovered thru time machine. i picked the back up that i knew did NOT have safari 6 in it. then re installed any updates and apps and ignored the safari 6 update. last night i googled 5.1.7 and found it on a website to download and now i am back to that version. GOOD LUCK!
I don't use Time Machine nor have a backup drive with all my stuff pre Safari 6 unfortunately. Apple should really provide an uninstaller, I know one was available for the beta but I just can't find that to test. I've e-mailed the dev's but don't know how long it'll take them to reply.
oh no! yeah i didn't have a back up until 4 months ago when i had to take my computer in for repairs and the guy talked me into it. i have only backed up 4 times. counting the one i have that has safari 6 in it. i hope some thing works for u soon. i totaly agree with u on this safari!
Thanks Apple for moderating the thread and removing key posts that are actually people trying to help others remove this app and revert to an earlier version. If you'd have created an uninstaller then us that are complaining around the web wouldn't have such issues.
What can we do?
+1
I agree, it's a terrible idea. The whole concept of the thing is based on you NEVER, EVER dumping dumping your history and cache files. If you do, the whole learning process will have to start all over again AFAIK.
Who comes up with these ideas? Certainly no with with any common sense. If it's not broken...don't mess with it. That ring any bells?
I was having all kinds of problems with Safari 6. I did the following to get it to work sufficiently. Repair all permissions using the new version of Onyx. Disable any third party extensions. Disable any "Special" add ons (Glims, Safari Stand, Omnibar), as these were causing my safari to crash randomly. Restart your computer, then try things out and see what happens. I believe so many people are having problems because of all the software we use to enhance safari that is not compatible with the newer version. Hope this helps you. I love safari, because it's the only browser that automatically hides and shows my bookmarks when in fullscreen (the only way I browse), so I much prefer it. Now if they would just bring back Ctrl + Enter to add .com to the end of a URL I would be content.
Developer of Glims said a compatible version of Glims ought to be released a week after Mountain Lion's release. I agree, uninstalling Glims is the best approach until an update occurs.
Very easy google "downlaod older safary for mac apple 5.1.7"
after you get the file, look for all safari files in your Mac and delete them
make sure you go from folder to folder to get rid of all of them, there are several,
and keep the bookmarks file from the user>library>preference>safari.
(To open that user library simply hold the option key while clicking on the
GO menu on the top left side of your screen.)
Then restart your mac and install the older version (5.1.7), if it doesn't take
you left some safari files on your mac, so look for them it is realy easy
you just need a little patience.
After installing the old safari run safari and adjust your preference then quit it and
replace the bookmarks file in the user>library>preference>safar and finally reopen safari, you are done!
Can anyone else verify this worked for them?
from what i understood, safari 6 was intergrated in the OS even in Lion. i would call Apple support and ask them. when i called them for help in fixing my problem with 6, they nevr had me dump anything.
