Unable to enable Airplay: AppleTV (3 gen) with MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion

Hi there,

I am currently running Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro (mid 2010), trying to mirror to Apple TV (3 gen) via Airplay. Both AppleTV and the MacBook is running on the same wireless net, and both have Airplay enabled.

I am able to connect via Home Sharing, but unable to locate the Airplay button in the new OS. Airplay is functioning with iPhone 4. I've followed Apple's advice, but I'm still not able to connect, or mirror.

Any thoughts on how to work this out?

Going to try Air Parrot. I'm very ****** off with Apple for limiting Mirroring to basically 1 year old computers. I have a 1.5 year old Air, bought in Jan 2011 but mirroring will only work with the Airs from mid 2011. Just 1 year old Airs ... really, Apple?

If Parrot doesn't function as well as I expect, I'm going to return the Apple TV in exchange for WD Media Player TV Live. If I can't mirror, I can't play stuff from my NAS server, then what's the use of Apple TV?

If Apple can't support this functionality for older Macs, at the very least, they can allow a beta version, like they did with Facetime for the Mac before it was integrated into Lion.

I'm going to try the Parrot and if it isn't as functional or smooth as I wanted it to be, I'm returning the Apple TV in exchange for the Western Digital TV Live media player. If I can't mirror, I can't play movies from my NAS, then what's the point of Apple TV?

At the very least, if Apple can't support this functionality for anything more than 1 year old Macs, then at least have a beta version for download at our own risk, like they did with Facetime for the Mac before it was integrated in Lion.

What a disappointment. I bet Steve Jobs would have vetoed this crap if he was still in charge.

>>I do have a mid 2010 MBP with i5 processor... Even an iPad can do mirror, why not MBP.

It's not going to happen. AirPlay mirroring relies on a specific hardware acceleration for h.264 encoding that exists only in the newer Intel CPUs.

As others have pointed out, you can use AirParrot if you would like to try - but unless you have a really beefy machine you'll quickly understand why Apple limited it to machines that have the specific hardware acceleration.
