Borders at Top And Bottom of AirPlay Mirroring

I got an Apple TV a month or so ago to compliment my iPad (3rd Gen) and use the AirPlay mirroring feature. However I am slightly disappointed to find that every time I mirror my iPad's screen, it appears with black borders at the top and bottom of the picture, I understand the need for borders left and right because of the 4:3 aspect but borders top and bottom make the picture smaller. Videos and Pictures appear properly but certain apps that are full screen (such as Asphalt 7) appear with borders all the way around.

If I change the Apple TV display settings from 1080p 60Hz to 1280x1024 60Hz then the iPad is mirrored perfectly without borders top and bottom only left and right as they hold be but ideally I want to keep the 1080p resolution if I can.

My Apple TV 3 is connected to my router via Ethernet and my iPad can use either 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi bands but nothing fixes the issue.

The HDTV is fairly new, a Samsung model from last year so that couldn't be the problem either.

Can anone advise? I've seen some posts on the Internet but they are mainly complaining about borders left and right not top and bottom.

I believe you've misunderstood the press release, not difficult I would have read it that way, but I believe that 1080p in that sense is referring to the basic AirPlay ability to stream content rather than mirroring.

Oh, here's the statement where apple says Airplay Mirroring will support 1080p!

Actually, that is the default setting, and is like that due to the lower pixel density of all non-Retina display devices. As for the iPad 3, I agree it is probably something on the TV. Televisions are so convoluted it makes Windows look practical.

I've just been experimenting with different things on the TV, Apple TV and iPad.

I tried setting the Apple TV to 720p and then set the iPad to AirPlay, the same black borders top and bottom remained. I switched the TV from 'Screen Fit' to '16:9', this reduced the black borders a little bit but it's still not flush with the edge of the screen. The only way I've found to do that is to set the Apple TV to 1280x1024 and the TV to 16:9 mode.

There doesn't appear to be any settings on the iPad itself and everything else on the Apple TV outside of AirPlay is displayed full screen without borders.

I have the same black bars on all sides problem. and yes it will show full screen on the TV only when changing the Apple TV resolution to 1280x1024 60Hz (no black bars shown on top/bottom), but at the same time I also noticed the mirroring image on the TV didn't look as sharp as the 1080p resolution (which shows black bars on all 4 sides). So I'd recommend against the 1280x1024 60Hz resolution. Just wait for Apple to release the fix soon (hopefully).

AirPlay mirroring only sends at 720p, by the sounds of things your TV doesn't appear to be handling the resolutions correctly, maybe a setting somewhere.
