Java is not supported on the iPad.
Puffin does NOT support Java applets. Actually, none of the AppStore browsers run (stream) Java. Your only choice is going for remote desktop services like AlwaysOnPC ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/office-flash-java-w-chrome/id380204369?mt=8 ) runs the applets at http://java.sun.com/applets/ just fine.
