I attempted to burn a DVD of the installer, but that didn't work (files are too big).

Also grabbed the ESD from inside the package and it started to work, then hung on the "installing" screen.

Here is how I finally solved the problem after redownloading it 4-5 times:

Put my MacBook Pro into target mode and used my Mac Mini to install Mtn Lion.

At first the installer balked saying it wasn't signed right or some such BS. I tried again and it worked fine. I now even have a recovery parition which I didn't have before.

So in the end I have no idea what the problem was but it was not:

  • A proxy error corrupting the download
  • A corrupted download of any kind
  • Permissions errors
  • Hard drive errors
  • Incompatability with RAM or my hardware
  • Incompatibility of my partitioning scheme

I think there is a bug in the "pre-flight" checks the installer does prior to doing its job.

I deleted and re-downloaded 4 times now and I continue to get the same message. The last part of the error message is confusing to me, "cant be used to install OS X". OS X is installed already. I am running 10.7.4. I believe there are some files clashing with system files. Ill continue to wait till the error pops up online, I am almost positive I am not the only person this has happened to.

I downloaded Mountain Lion again, this time to another computer. It installs fine on my Mac Mini, but my MacBook Pro (13" Mid-2010) keeps giving me the "this copy is damaged" error.

I've eliminated one of my partitions so I just have 10.7.4 and BootCamp, but I do NOT have a recovery partition.

Permissions are fine. Hard drive checks out fine from Disk Utitlity and Drive Genius 3.

Any solutions other than trying the start all over again and wipe the drive 😟

Thanks,

Rich

I finally got it to work; however, it is not the most ideal way, but it worked. Luckily i have saved backups on my time machine. So I after countless number of download attempts and tech support calls with no results, I finally decided to erase my disk and start from scratch (a risky decision). So I then redownloaded OS X Lion and it installed with no issues, then I downloaded Mountain Lion and what do you knw, it installed on the first attempt. I then recovered my files from back up and it is working like a champ now. Of course then my battery blew up like a popcorn bag, but that's a discussion for another forum room.

In conclusion I believe I was having some partition issues and ML couldn't install properly, therefore the system defaulted with this error message. I should've done this from the start, because erasing to installing ML and recovering files was less than 40 minutes, compared to the days I have spent troubleshooting. Good luck everyone with their install, if all else fails create a back up and start from scratch.
