I started downloading videos in *.FLV format then using VLC to convert this file to *.m4v. I need videos from online sites for educational purposes.

Just yesterday, I downloaded a video and converted the file. So far do good. The video kept its high definition and playback via QuickTime was flawless. I'm running a 1st Gen Unibody 2.53 Duo Core MBP and it did take me a bit but she managed to convert this file.

Hey Bill B.3 Your way is the best so far. it's a little tricky to pick up, but the easest. I double clicked on the link that gets highlight, then you can right click and there is the "download source file" that you said would be there. It work great. I tested three times on three videos, works great and it easest by far. Thanks

In Safari 6.

1. Click Preferences

2. Click Advanced Tab

3. Check the 'Show Develop menu in menu Tab' button located @ the bottom of the menu.

->You should now have a Develop menu button in the top menu between Bookmarks and Window

4. Click Develop menu button.

5. Click Show Page Resources

-> This will open a window pane along the bottom of the browser should look something like this:

User uploaded file

6. You want to make sure that you have the the file icon selected top left hand corner of the grey bar

7. Any downloadable FLV will appear the folder called 'Other'

User uploaded file

8. just click on the FLV file or any other file you want do download and it will downloand to your download directory.

-> if the flv doesn't load the first time, keep the developer window pane open and just reload the window, as the page loads all the resources will load one at a time into the developer window as a long list, once all the resources are loaded safari will then organise them into folders, most video content will be in the folder labeled 'Other', just double click what ever you want. For some video's this doesn't work because they have restrictions.

Also the Develop menu also allows you to turn on WebGL.

I hope this helps.

It's still possible to download videos without any additional plugins, you just have to do it a slightly different way, explained below;

(Actually this first step is optional, as the keyboard shortcut works whether the Develop menu is enabled or not)

First, make sure the "Show Develop menu in menu bar" checkbox is ticked from Safari, Preferences -> Advanced, it's at the bottom.

Secondly, go to the page where you want to download the file from.

Thirdly, either go to the Develop menu, and choose "Show Page Resources" or press the shortcut ⌥⌘A (A with Cmd and Alt held down) which is the same shortcut as the old Activity Window;

This will open the Page Resources inspector, which if you haven't seen it before can be quite confusing, but don't worry. What you're looking out for is a little finger pointing cursor icon in the top right hand side of the middle bar, that looks like this;

User uploaded file

Click that and then click on the video you want. When you mouse over the video, or any other element of the page, it should turn blue. Clicking this shoud take you to the link to the video in the page source code as shown in the Inspector at the bottom. Mouse over that, so it underlines in blue and right click on that link and choose "Edit Attribute" what you're after should be highlighted.

Copy that to your clipboard with ⌘C.

Click on your downloads icon in the top right hand side of Safari, and press ⌘V. There's no indication that you can do that, but you can. Your download should begin.

Viola! Job done with no plugins.

This seems to be a pretty popular gripe with Safari but all that's how to do it.

Hope that helps

I was missing Activity too but it is not completely gone although it´s a bit different.

Hitting alt-cmd-i opens the developer window.

You got to choose "Show Developer in the menu" in Safari/Preferences.

You get a window with three columns. In the left column you have some hirarchy. One of which is called Others. Here on my german system it is Anderes. This one contains movies currently played. Similar to Activity.

If you found the proper line click on it. In the right column, under Location you will find the complete Url which you can copy, similar to Activity.
