Hi All,
After Mountain Lion my 2010 iMac 27" won't sleep, shut down, restart, or log out.
Basically most functionalities of clicking the apple icon are disabled - "About this Mac" doesn't work either.
Please help!
Before Apple fixes this, is there another way of putting my Mac to sleep or shut down?
iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion
after deleting 3 to 4 times and doing sudo reboot 3 to 4 times i finally able to shut down my system

I tried the previous steps but the files
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
dosen't exiest and the last tow steps which I did ...
My Mac pro still not able to shutdown unless press and hold the power

Are you sure you are looking at your home directory?
Right click on Finder on your dock and select "go to folder..." and type in ~/Library/Preferences/
You can probably find those files in that folder.
If you still don't see those files in that folder, then I don't know what to say.
earlier i told that the problem is solved but after one day it still continues
but i created another user account which is not administrator if i switch to that account and press shut down button system is shutting down
i think backgroung apps are not closing and those apps are preventing system to shut down
my imac is restarting itself and on a grey screen saying sytem is shutdown because of problem and press any key to continue i think its similar to kernel panics so can you tell me how to resolve this problem

In my MacBook Air 2010 no Lion has worked as smoothly as Snow Leopard did. Wake up times are sometimes very long, screen backlight is not always turned on and I have to put my mac to sleep and wakeup couple of times before the backlight wakes up. Also, every now and then when the screen saver is running and I try to unlock my mac the login window does not show up. However, if I just blindly write my password I can log in. I assume the screensaver runs on top of the login screen.
When I started to use Mac the biggest difference to Windows was that the computer slept and woke up very quickly. It did that every time and never woke up on its own like Windows does. Now I'm not sure if Mac OS works any better than Windows anymore. That's a shame. Apple should consider not to add useless functionality to OS X, but instead make sure the most important features actually work each and every time as they did in the past.

These drivers seem to be for 10.5?
What kind of drive are these drivers for? Do you still need them?
Try to look for an upgrade or uninstall them, if you do not need them.
Could it be the seagate drive is formatted in NTFS? This was the last loaded kext.....
Followed the instructions. Worked like a charm when nothing else did (resetting PRAM, SMC etc). Finally able to shut down / sleep / restart. Mac seems to boot / run faster too.

I started having problems even before upgrading to ML. I don't even use the darn Dock. But restoring default doc preferences seems to have worked.

Had exactly the same problem - wouldant shut down at all.
I repaired permissions in disk utility but still no joy. I then used force quit for all applications that were running on the background etc and it shut down first time - I believe that if anything is open on your dock it wont shut down - maybe wrong but its worked for me
Are you using Dropbox? If yes, disable LAN Sync mode
The delete for dock.plist and sudo reboot does not work for me.
i am back to the original dock but after 10 time - i can always not shutdown/sleep/reboot.
I have deleted all my launch agent - i have no login item - i have killed my dropbox and reinstall the OS from the recovery partition... what could i do more ?
