In spotlight, type in Java, and click on Java Preferences in the list - it will then start downloading and installing the new version. (my java version is now 1.6.0_33-b03-424)

I'm running ML, among others, and Java SE 6 JRE is installed. Both run, it's just that you need SL's Java Preferences app to control SE 6 JRE in Lion and ML. This in the Terminal app, reveals:

/Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -version

java version "1.7.0_25"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_25-b15)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.25-b01, mixed mode)

Whereas, for Java SE 6 JRE, java -version shows:

java version "1.6.0_51"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_51-b11-456-10M4508)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.51-b01-456, mixed mode)
