None of the "soft" approaches worked for me.

I had to install 8 GB RAM (Kingston, 40 EUR in Germany via Amazon) when I upgraded my MacBook Pro 15-inch Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 from snow leopard to mountain lion OS X 10.8.2

The system was initially painfully (!!) slow. Activity monitor showed actually quite some free memory, so I tried (almost) all the software approaches including Onyx and cleaning the hard drive as mentioned in this and other threads. All in vain

After the additional 4 GB all is working well.

I had a similar experience. Original Macbook Pro with 4 GB RAM ran ok under Lion then just about died under ML even though Activity Monitor show plent of memory free. Upgraded to total 16 GB RAM and now runs like an Aston Martin.

VERY strange that this solves a problem which Activity Monitor doesn't indicate to be there in the first place?

Hey Everyone,

I am new to the postings but have been a Mac user for years. I have the new 17" macbook pro with 8gb and ran into the very same problem. I did all the research and tried the ultimate...a factory restore. It worked and my beast is running at full throttle. I was talking to one of your computer gurus and he said it was most likely a bad install when it left the factory or I installed/deleted something that jacked it up.

Anyway, I am happy now and want to thank you all for the post.

I have a MacBook Pro with 8 gigs of Ram and a 750 gig HD. It came new with Mountain Lion installed and I updated to 10.8.2. I have only had the machine for 3 months. I have already corrupted the OS once and had to take it back for a complete reinstall. Now the OS runs horribly slow. The worst is when I'm online and typing. The machine will lag and the color wheel will spin several times in a short period of time. My internet connection is DSL 3mps. It will also lag when I'm using Photoshop Elements, Lightroom and Open Office. Sometimes it will lock up all together if I have 2 or 3 programs running at once. I though Macs were better than this (this is my first Mac). I had a 6 year old PC that ran better than this, and it had Photoshop CS6 running on it.

Time machine only back-ups your files, not applications, right? I am reluctant to do the factory reset as I do not have all applications on CDs. Some were downloaded from the internet, and I might have to pay again for a re-installation. Any advice on this?

How did you do that. To enter en safe mode I think that is cmd+R when you turn on the computer, but the rest ....

Unfortunately, I have to revise this statement: yes, the additonal RAM accelarated the machine, but gradually the system became unbelievably slow! Beach balls al the time, and sometimes even keying in text into an email would appear only after a few seconds delay.

I therefore also decided to go for the clean install, using Lion DiskMaker. The process is lengthy but straightforward. (Make sure to save the mountain lion dmg file after download!) I only restored files and settings from time machine, and re-installed all software.

Preliminary result: boot-up until login screen before: 1:10 min, after re-installation: 44 seconds.

Hi Everyone,

My Leopard Early 2008 MacBook Pro i5 ran like a charm w/ both Leopards.

Since throwing my MacBook to the Lion's however I have since doubled the Ram (Maxed out at 4GB) and put in a 500GB 7200rpm high performance drive. Lion 10.7 is what I call the Vista of OS X. It immedialtey slowed everything down to a crawl. Memory leaks galore if I leave my browser or apps open.

Mountain Lion 10.8 made my MacBook somewhat useable but its been brutal as of late, beach balls galore can't click, kernel panics etc.. Having upgraded from 10.5 - 10.8 3 major bumps I wonder if I should do a clean install of lion or try from a repair install to give the system files a refresh and repair any permissions problems.

Let me know if anyone else found a resolution to this issue so I don't have to buy one of those glossy screen Macbooks with the ugly black keys. P.S. replaced my battery too and its still lousy battery life.

Ron,

From my experience with my 2010 MacBook Pro the clean install was what ultimately helped. Took quite some effort and particularly time, of course, but was definitely worth it. However, I also have 8 GB RAM.

Black keys are quite nice actually 😉

update: nevermind, I found the links that someone posted to try all these things, thank you.

Could someone please tell us how to boot up in safe mode and what "SMC" means.

Not all of us are up on this stuff. I just want to use my Macs and have them run faster and after Mountain Lion it's gotten so slow.

Also how do I reset "NVRAM"

I know how to rest PRAM but that did nothing to speed it up.

I have used Disk Utility a lot in the last two months, also does not speed anything up.

Thanks for your other tips.

I must recommend this sequence (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4140958?answerId=19111878022#19111878022) as it was successful for me. My MBP 13in Early 2011 had gotten so slow as to be unusable: oodles of beach balls, Safari stalls, and slow boots. Onyx picked up a disk repair issue, and after the full Monte, things are back to a normal state. Thanks for the links embedded in your post. Nice touch.

I'm having the same issue with the same model MBP (Late 2008). I maxed out my RAM at 4GB and still have these issues. Let me know if you find a fix. Here's what I've done so far:

Cleaned Fonts and other caches using Onyx

Reset NVRAM and PRAM

Logged in with Safe Boot

Started back up normally

It seems the memory usage of Mountain Lion is the real culprit and I may just downgrade back to Snow Leopard unless someone has a solution.

Upgraded a MBP from Leopard all the way to ML and it took at least a 1:30 to boot when it would only take about 20 seconds before. After following the NVRAM procedure it still took a long time. Once i saw another suggestion said Safe Mode way. Tried that and now its back in 20 seconds give or take. Definitely worked!

Hello! My Macbook is so slow since I switched to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. I tried all advices described above in the thread. Unfortunately, nothing happened. Even after upgrading RAM there is no changes.
