Can’t turn off iMessage sound
Despite sounds turned off in notification center for iMessages I still receive a swoosh sound on each new message.

Hi,
Yep that is the answer for Yosemite and Higher.
For Mavericks and those still using this 2012 version the answer is here in this thread

Hi Ralph,
Sorry to dig up this old thread. The "Alerts" button seems to have disappeared in Messages Preferences in OSX Mavericks. How do I change these preferences now? The Notifications preferences are not that detailed.
Thanks.
i want to know the answer to this. it is driving me insane.
Go to Messages>Preferences. Then in the alerts tab, use the drop down message to go to message received and message sent etc. Then turn off the sound on each one.
Did. Still making the annoying quiet burp sound.
In addition to the prior suggestions, will the sound go away if you switch Notifications > Messages between Banners and Alerts. Does the sound persist in either category?
Yes. Sound persists. Also cannot change to another tone. It seems the menu to control it must be missing.
Messages>preferences? Is there a preferences somewhere besides Settings? Somewhere in Messages itself or something? I find messages under general>sounds or under notifications. Nowhere else.
I fixed the problem....Turn the sound off in notifications/text tones
Hi,
There are three places.
The System Preferences > Notifications.
Messages > Preferences > Alerts.
Alerts can also be set Individually for iChat type buddies.
Display a Buddy List
Highlight a Buddy.
Use CMD and I keys together (Get Info)
Select Alerts.
The Messages > Preferences > Alerts can have several sounds linked to a Buddy list.
Sound for Coming On Line (Becoming Available) are normally different to them going Off Line.
It may pay to check that they are all Off (and possible set to different sounds to be able to check which action if causing the sound to be triggered)
The Volume of these are controlled in System Preference > Sound > Sound Effects
All Alerts are played in normal everyday use as if they are System Alerts
Testing in Messages uses a different process to play them and they may be played at different volumes.

Hi Pagemakers2 - Do you have any alert now at all though when you have an imessage?
I want an incoming alert but no outgoing swoosh but don't see anyway to achieve that... SO frustrating!
Hi,
In Messages > Preferences > Alerts
Change the top item to read Message Sent.
Tick the Sound Box
Select Sound.
It should work for the iMessages account as well as AIM or Jabber Logins (Buddy Lists)

Hi there,
I have no "preferences" when I click in "Messages" under settings...
I have imessage "on or off"
Send Read Receipts "on or off"
Send & receive & then the email address that I have set to imessage
Show Subject Field "on or off"
That is all I have...
When I go into messages themselves I don't have preferences either - I only have "Edit" or to Start New Message
Thank you
HI,
In the Messages Menu there is an option called Preferences.
This opens the Preferences Pane which has several icons across the top.
One of these is Accounts
One of the Accounts in the List will be the iMessages one.
One of the other iCons across the top is labelled Alerts.
This contains several lines.
The top one is a drop down that then lists several Actions that happen with the App.
One of those actions is "Messages Sent"
It is common here to write Place to start > next step > followed by next step where the > means go to.
This is a series of Actions rather than path to a file such as Users/(your account name)/Library/Preferences
This way can be Copied and Pasted into the Finder's > Go Menu > Go to Folder > Dialogue box (if you substitute your name properly)

My post was entered under iPad forum. These responses appear to be Mac OS related.
If anyone has a way to mute or at least change the iMessage sound on iPhone and iPad we all would appreciate it.
The sound in question, BTW, to me is a stifled burp. Another opinion is the sound effect in a cartoon when the script says "gulp". Either way, one's phone or tablet mimicking a bodily function was a bad idea.
