Airplay mirroring says "no devices detected"

I have a mid 2012 (brand new) macbook pro. Brand new apple TV bought at the same time. Apple TV is on and connected to same network as my macbook pro. I just want to mirror my macbook to my new TV via apple TV. Airplay mirroring on macbook pro says "no devices detected" and is grayed out with no option to change or have it look again after a restart of both Macbook pro, TV and apple TV. Any help out there for this one? Mine is a macbook pro compatible with airplay and I have mountain lion.

In my experience to date, Apple updates are downgrades that screw up your settings. Go to settings on the Apple TV device with that crappy remote, make sure Airplay is 'on', then when you go to settings on your computer, under 'Displays', it should detect the Airplay device. Any update will probably delete your choice, so you'll have to do it again.

NO MORE downgrade UPDATES please !!!

I agree with tkoenig, this is likely an apple problem/glitch.

After the ATV goes to sleep, my macbook air cannot find it for airplay mirroring even after the ATV unit is turned back on.

My fix was pretty easy. The solution is to go to settings, find the airplay menu, turn it off, then back on.

After this simple step, my Macbook air can detect the airplay mirroring as another display option, and it works smoothly.

Hope this helps some folks.

Had the same problem this morning. No airplay although I was using it last night. Nothing on my mac pro or iphone. Did everything that all suggested. I had wifi so it couldnt be that problem right? wrong I turned off wifi and rebooted my router, turned on my wifi on the computerand bingo my airplay icon is back on. So I really didnt think my router had anything to do with it since I had wifi but it did.

I have to retract my earlier statement. I did a little more reading on this topic and it seems as though ATV does not play well in a network with an extended set up (ie a second router running to extend the wifi signal). I changed my set up so that my second router does not broadcast the same ssid (i just renamed it xxx_extended) and I have not had problems since. Somehow when the second router was confusing ATV when it was broadcasting the same ssid (i think my maneuver on the prior post was just reseting which router the ATV was using each time). this makes my setup a little more combersome since I have to maunal change which ssid i am connecting to depending on where i am in my house, but at least i dont have to physcially reset the router each time... hope this helps.

I GOT IT WORKING!!!

My problem was that in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL the folder "AirPlay.driver" was MISSING!

I copied it over from another MacBook, restarted the coreaudio - and BAM - AirPlay icon displaying in toolbar, and also in display settings! All works perfectly now!

Somehow this AirPlay.driver had gotten deleted..... and NO posts on this on the internet?!!?!

Worked for me too. Go into McAfee All Access - Internet Security Preferences , click on Firewall.

Make sure you click on the lock at the bottom left corner of the window if the "Type" is grey'd out. It's likely set to Public.

Once you open the lock button, change to "Home of Work". You should see the Airplay icon now in the upper bar.

Click on the lock again to "lock" it in.

Searched and searched and finally solved my problem of "no devices detected". Hurray! Turned off McAffee firewall so in the system preferences- displays with firewall on the Apple TV was grayed out. As soon as I turned it off. It was no longer grayed out and I chose Airplay Display "apple tv" and the Icon appeared in toolbar. Hurray I could watch my movie! I hope this helps.
