Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Again at this stage in the game going through a bunch of backwards compatability, special treatment for one app is just BS. My Mac works great. All other apps work great. When I have to dance around, chanting a spell and waving a chicken bone while facing due north for one application to work....I'm done.

If Apple gets it together and fixes the problem, super! But for now I'm enjoying exploring other DAW's and have been for a few months now.

I'm very curious what your experience has been with other DAWs. I've just started. I don't like Abelton, that much I know for sure. I gave it a big try and it just didn't feel like a good fit for the kind of music I do, which is much more compositional. I've now started to play around with DP. Already on the visual side it doesn't have the same polish as Logic Pro, but I've barely cracked into it.

One feature hard to beat is Logic's workflow, especially with MIDI, plus... I'm so used to using screensets I almost never bother with the one size fits all arrange window.

However, audio is another story, for me audio editing is Logic's weakest link.

For those enjoying the compatibility of 10.8.2 and 9.1.8,

Will they do the gunea pig test to update 10.8.3 (if available)?

I would agree with Pancenter on the MIDI front, but I have to disagree with him on the Audio front. If Pancenter truly believes that most o ther DAWs are better on the audio front (for anything not relating to stability lol) he probably hasn't really played with all the other DAWs in a while, not that that is a bad thing, I just often do so in my line of work and I'd have to say that Audio editing and processing in Logic is superior to that of Live, Reason (even 6.5), Cubase (although it has a few things that Logic does not have, that works both ways), FL and quite a few others. I can't comment on DP (nobody has ever brought it to my studio) but to me it seems like the only things comparable are Pro Tools and Studio One 2, and SO2 I can see would really take some getting used to along with the obvious lack of Flex Time (something I've found I use a lot more than I thought I would).

Flex Time is somewhat helpful, but sometimes creates more work then just slicing up the track and moving the edits around manually. It often introduces very annoying distortions that need to be solved and can be more time-consuming.

@Fredo Viola, Flex Time is a tool that needs to be used with great knowledge of how it work, then it would give great results. This is my experience.

I have to agree, but I also find myself using a combination of the two. Sometimes you sit down to mix a take and start lining up the vocals perfectly, and you realise that there's a somewhat elongated vowel in a singers harmony track for example. Slicing and moving it works, but the shorter tail end on the harmonies becomes noticeable so the only solution other than a retake (often a more complex option if your singer has travelled far and you dont want the hassle of mixing takes made on a different setup and sent over email) is to stretch it. As long as it's not something like a lead vocal or a more complex part harmonically (e.g rapid series of notes) I would hazard it and due to blending it's usually pretty unoticeable.

I have a few clients that have a habit of doing this. Without Flex Time they may have started using other studios closer to them for a large body of thier work.

One of the best bits of knowledge when it comes to Flex Time:

Place your flex markers so that you get the timing you need

Open the sample editor, and enter flex mode. Use hte '-' button to detect as few transients as possible.

This will handle the artifacts you are talking about pretty quickly. You may still need to hunt a few down, but believe me... it's really one of the best things ever besides swipe comping.

I had to flex time an orchestra. They recorded the winds and strings on different days.

I didn't end up having to shoot myself in the head! Yay!

Going back to snow leopard was the only option for me after I did everything I could to get rid of the latency, with lion, and mountain lion, just because I'm more confortable working with logic's features as flex tool, midi handling, etc...

I am also an experienced Ableton user, and there were absolutely no issues on those OS.

Had a shot also on the new Cubase before reinstalling 10.6.8, guess what? No ui issues.

Changed hard drive, changed video card, changed RAM, changed pusher... no results.

I don't agree with Fredo as I think it's hardware related, think about it:

you tried your drive into a different machine and there was no lag?

I tried my mac pro time machine backup on my laptop and lag is not there..

a different machine even with same components it's different for god sake.

@ Tommysca, you're right... I'd given up on Flex time before adequately learning it. There's a lot of detailed adjustments that make it work much better. And thanks, sflogicninja for the advice. 🙂

Alexander One, it's not my opinion, just what I was told by one of the Senior Logic Pro team members, and he said so quite difinitively. But you could be right, maybe as well? Monkeys.

This thing is gone too far for me,

so I decided when the upgrade time will come, my next machine will be a PC.

I worked for 10 years on apple happily and with no major bugs or production slowdowns, by myself, in the radio station where I worked, production studios & the radio station where I am now.

Neither I know nor I want to know what the problem is, trust me,

'cause we're not apple employees or developers, we're customers, and they are treating us like a bunch of idiots.

my machine is worth a ton of dollars, like all yours, and for me, being unable to upgrade to two purchased OS (lion & mountain) due to a ridiculous bug makes me so angry you can't even imagine, don't know about your feelings.

If the issue was on iPad or iWhatever, the fix would have been out before the bug reached the public customers.

It depends on what kind of audio and music you work with.. I record mostly solid performers, I don't want perfection in timing as much as I want a strong performance and good writing. When I edit audio using Cubase I have all of my plugins available to work on highlighted sections of audio. I can remove sibilance by hand much more efficiently than trying to use automation and bounce in place, and do a better job of it. Logic's audio editor while serviceable is somewhat archaic in comparison to what's available in Cubase. I've always done editing by hand, eye & ear, Logic is slow and unintuitive by comparison. You would see what I mean if you had access to all of your plugins in the sample editor, free to use them on any part of the audio with unlimited undo's.

I suspect Logic X will remedy this.

Why don't you simply set up Bootcamp and Install/Run windows on your Mac.... Then you can switch back and forth as and when you need to simply by rebooting.... and so you can have the best of both worlds at your fingertips...

Also I have got to say that Bootcamp is one of the great successes/bonues of the switch to Intel.. and for mne, it works flawlessly...
