Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

@ Pancenter

I'm following this thread, and in general I would say that it's good to know that others are 1) having the same technical challenges as I am, 2) just as frustrated as I am with this issue. I agree that there should be a balance, but to demand that people don't share their feelings and frustration is probably a) not possible, b) not what we as a user community really want... however pro or semi-pro we may be.

Best,

Thomas

I don't see that any "demands" were made? I simply think that incessant whining is merely a selfish pastime that is not constructive to finding and working with the problem... this is a users forum and my thoughts/opinions are my own just like everyone elses.

Besides, the lag problem affects a very small percentage of users, some who could easily fix or avoid the problem if they choose to do so.

How many times can you say that your "gutted" because Logic is not 100% compatible with the current OS.. and what good does it do, past the 30th time.

Meanwhile... last week I created a 30 second (demo) for a Cable Television outlet and sold it for $3000.00.

Using Logic of course!

It's a Demo, and not optimized for high output, a simple southern rock/Lousiana type thing. Now I just have to record the final master using a few real players instead of doing everything myself.

buddhistmarty,

I have to admit to you, I understand your pain. I really do. But the more I look into other DAWs, and even with the Logic Pro lag, I still think Logic Pro is the best DAW. And I know for an absolutely certain fact that this lag issue is being taken very seriously and dealt with. The only thing I can suggest is just be patient and learn another DAW for that just in case situation where at some point Logic Pro is discontinued (which I really do not believe will happen right now!)

Anyway, a question for you folks - at the top of this page it says "branched to a new discussion" but when I click that link it says I'm not allowed to access it. anyone know what this means? I'm pretty sure I didn't write anything offensive or against the rules....

Fredo,

This simply means this discussion (the one you are acessing) was branched off from another discussion at some point in the past....

I see the same thing here... as will everyone accessing this thread.

Fredo,

Whether logic would stop production? It's just my hunch feeling and logical reasoning.

No money no talk. Money rules everything. Logic was always my first prioritized DAW,though.

ableton as supplementary. now they are switched. It's funny always get my shortcut mixed up.

Just barely managed to keep my workflow to a minimum hiccough.

Hi guys,

Today, with a lot of patience, and the help of this:

http://khiltd.com/software/consultants_canary,

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25276/appcleaner, and this

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11076/easyfind

I decided to clean bit by bit my Mac. The list of the things I got rid of is large. Kernel Extensions, Frameworks, Services, etc. Identifying in the internet what everything was before quarantining or deleting anything.

Just wanted to let you know that, afterwards and to my surprise I open several sessions and I've been working on them with no lag so far...

I won't be able to tell you what I did delete because I didn't kept a record of it. I just barely remember some things. My bad, sorry about that. (I did it as a general maintenance and didn't repair on Logic's trouble)

Anyway Consultants Canary lists in terminal all third party additions to the system when u run it. I was stupid enough no to make any copy of them. But if u do make a copy, clean the system, and experience no lag either it could help to identify which those with the problem have in common and those without doesn't have.

I'm not telling this is a solution and be careful if you decide to do it and mess with the system. I did have a complete backup before attempting anything and enough free time to recover in case I need to do it...

I will keep informing you if lag returns...

Maybe we should put together a list of machines that are affected by this problem, and machines that aren't. I have a mid-2009 MBP 13 with 8gb of ram. The lag started happening last summer when I upgrded to ML from Lion. I wasn't having any problems with Lion. However, to be safe I downgraded to Snow Leopard, and haven't had any problems.

So anyhow, lets see if we can get the problem narrowed down. Here's my machine that was affected.

MacBook Pro 2.26 Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256mb, 8GB DDR3

The issue is not hardware related...

It is a software problem relating to the OS and most likely incorrect or improperly installed delta updates done to the OS over time... or initially during first install of the OS.

As to why I know this...

Two identical iMacs with identical specs and 'supposedly' identical versions of the OS and Logic (10.8.2 and 9.1.8)

One demonstrated severe lag issues and the other did not.

Mirror imaged the System drive from the iMac without the problem onto the iMac that had the issue and the problem vanished

Therefore it has to be software related and again, most likely the OS itself... as the lag problem has been seen using other apps and not just Logic.
