Now I seem to be having problems expanding columns in Finder. The double arrow  cursor appears briefly then vanishes. It is very difficult to make columns  wider or narrower. I hope this is not another java bug.

OK I have read every post in this thread.

I use my Mac heavily all day in PS and LR and never had an issue at all. I was, however, using a Wacom tablet exclusively.

When I replaced my work machine with a new iMac I took the old (reliable) mini (2012) home.

I use it at home with a mouse. Not a tablet.

I immediately started losing the cursor. At first I thought it was the funky old MS mouse I was using but nooo, the brand new wireless magic mouse exhibited the same behavior.

The cursor can disappear almost at any time but usually (for me) disappears when the machine is idle for some time. I do switch resolutions from a connected big screen TV on occasion but even when mirroring is off and the resoltion is set properly for the display the problem occurs.

I never lose the cursor on my new iMac when using the tablet. I can't say I would if I used a mouse but the fact is that the phenomena has ONLY appeared when I have connected a mouse (wireless or corded) to the machine.

Read this whole thread. Tried everything suggested, nothing worked.

    I have a Wacom tablet + iMac i7 27'' late 2011 w. Mountain Lion + Photoshop = disappearing cursor issues.

I am about to pull out my hair, this issue is really annoying. I am an artist using photoshop ALOT. I often change cursors from brushes to stamps to pens etc, maybe every 20-30 seconds (or more rapidly). This issue seems to be occuring when I change betweeen cursors.

And NO.. this is not a PS issue as I have seen this also in other software that depend a lot on changing the cursor appearance fequently.

I have found a temp fix by going into Mission Control and switch back real quickly, that seems to fix it but I have to do it almost 2-3 times a minute while working so it is really just a very annoying workaround!

$4600 worth of hardware, $1000 worth of software and it's virtually USELESS! Apple can't keep ignoring this.

    Hi again evrybody.

The only solid solution for the time is to install snow leopard. i did that without any problems or feeling i downgrated. It has the same enviroment, a little more stable or glitchy and no cursor problems.

  • pungsveittur Level 1 Level 1

The reason I upgraded to Mountain Lion was issues with an external HD on Snow Leopard, always unmouting on its own without reason. This exact issue here:

I am not about to go back to having an unstable backup drive.

I powered down my mac and then restarted. That seemed, so far, to make the very frequent and annoying disappearing cursor go away. The problem happend in both safari and firefox so it is not in the browser. OS X 8.2. Before powering down the power had been on for months.

I, by chance found another way to find my lost cursor. I used to Cmd-tab, release, Cmd-tab, to get it back. I find that I can do the same by tapping on the Finder, and then back to Photoshop.

Curiously, I have the problem only in Photoshop CS6 and Painter 12. Safari, and other apps, no problem.

    My config:

    Mac Pro early 2009, 10.7.5

    5870 graphic card

In a previous post i reported that a 3 finger swipe (there and back) on a trackpad is the quickest way that i restore the mouse. However i haven't had the problem since updating Java.

  • shnyhd Level 1 Level 1

Sorry, but every "solution" posted here is superstition.

A mystical combination of keystrokes, trackpad swipes and tummy rubs is not going to solve a very real problem. I expect that the problem will disappear at some time for most people and it will be because some conflicting hardware/software combination no longer exists because of updates or obsolesence. Whatever it is, it seems most likely that it will dispappear without us ever knowing why.

  • SteveKir Level 3 Level 3

Exactly. However, it is taking a long time for me. In 2011 I bought my new iMac with Lion, then I updated to Mountain Lion, and still the cursor disappears about ten times a day, accompanied by a shiver of the contents of the window to the right, then to the left as the cursor returns after I have pressed Escape. If I am not looking at the the screen at the time I merrily type away with nothing happening. Also, the cursor skits about the screen, way off to the left or right, sometimes when I just touch the Magic Mouse, and I have to scroll back. This disrupts graphics programs hugely. With the very many reports of problems over the years I think Apple should have said something by now, even if it is just "get lost!".

I just had this problem happen for the first time. Just downloaded (but not installed) silverlight. I was just opening finder, to run the installer from the DMG file and i couldnt find the mouse pointer.

So i started cmd+tabbing to close each program down one by one. and when i closed Safari down, guess what, i found my pointer.

cmon apple, making shiny, overpriced equipment alone doesnt cut it.

what happened to 'it just works'? did that die with steve jobs?
