Duplicate notes? Notes not syncing?

Is anyone having problems with duplicate notes in Mountain Lion?

When I first open up Notes.app on MacBook, I am greeted with "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with (my iCloud account)."

User uploaded file

I open iCloud Preferences, but everything looks fine.

And these settings are exactly the same on my iPhone 4S.

It looks like my MacBook thinks I have two iCloud accounts in the Note.app but I should only have one. Unchecking the Notes box in iCloud Preferences, only takes one iCloud account off of notes. So, even with iCloud turned totally off and signed out, my notes application still thinks I am signed in.

So when I add a noted from the MacBook, the note gets duplicated just seconds afterwards.

Sometimes it even makes three copies.

None of the notes from my Mac sync to my iPhone and none from iPhone sync to my Mac.

Sometimes, the application on the Mac will crash, interestingly enough exactly at the time when my iPhone and Mac *should* be communicating together.

Anyone else have these issues? Or just me?

Thanks in advance.

I have exactly the same issue. (I upgraded, not fresh install) At first I thought it was because of notes syncing via Gmail too, much like the duplication you see in Calendar due to multiple accounts. But after removing Gmail notes from the iCloud options, no result.

Without thinking, I then deleted the second record of the duplication in Notes on my Mac - because when I deleted the first duplicate, it just bounced back. But after switch iCloud syncing on and off in the Mac preferences I now see duplicates again. Only thing is that I have an account in Notes on my iPhone called "On my iPhone" that has notes that no longer are synced, so see them on the iPhone only, not on my Mac.

As stated above, I see two iCloud accounts iso one - this is a giveawy that the Apple engineers did not come accross this during their own scenario testing. I cannot imagine this to be part of a legitimate use case?

I figured it out guys. On you iPhone or iPad notes app, click on accounts on the top left. You can see the accounts you have in the notes app. The particular notes that sync are the ones that are in the iCloud account. I basically had to copy and paste the notes I had from other accounts into the iCloud. Works like a charm. I had the same issue cause my main notes were all save to the "iPhone" account, which would only save the notes on the iPhone.

Unfortunately this isn't a fix for me as I am trying to synch Notes from my iCloud account only. No other accounts with Notes. I'm pretty sure that this bug is happening to people who have been syncing iCloud notes within the Mail app on Macs before ML release. I hope Apple can fix this on their end without having to wait for 10.8.1 since I have no Notes functionality at all.

I too am having this same problem and cannot resolve it, though I've tried quite a bit.

I have two Macs. My iPhone shows only one set of data (which is good).

I've noticed that if I edit the "Account Details" in System Prefs > iCloud to name the account "iCloud MP" on my Mac Pro and "iCloud MBA" on my MacBook Air, that the bottom one changes to "iCloud MBA" on the MBA, and the top one to "iCloud MP" on the MP.

Changing the name in that panel doesn't change the greyed name in the system prefs panel, though.

I've even tried unchecking them both, but that doesn't seem to matter either.

A fix for this would be REALLY nice... 😝

This worked for me: in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts & Calendars, I saw two "iCloud" accounts: one with the black-and-silver iCloud icon, and a new one (since my upgrade to Mountain Lion) with a blue "@" symbol. BOTH of these accounts showed that they are syncing notes. I unchecked the Notes under the new "@" iCloud account.

That immediately resolved my duplicate notes; all of the dupes disappeared.

[Interestingly, the two iCloud accounts also both show Mail as an option. The new "@" iCloud has the check box checked, but the old silver-black iCloud does not. I checked the latter to see what would happen, and after an attempt at configuring my Mail account, it gave up and unchecked the Mail option.]

Interesting. I haven't seen that myself in any of the systems that have been upgraded to Mountain Lion. I'm seeing only one iCloud account (with the black-and-silver iCloud icon), and even with Notes un-checked the Notes app on the Mac continues to sync with the Notes app on iOS and to the Notes folder in iCloud mail (visible within iCloud's web interface).

I'm having this same issue. The Notes app on my Mac says I have two iCloud accounts and it keep duplicating notes. When I go into System Preferences I only have one iCloud account.

When I first installed Mountain Lion the notes was left unchecked for iCloud. Not sure why. I opened notes and it was syncing with iCloud, even though it wasn't checked. I started having issues where it wasn't pushing the info to my other devices so I turned iCloud notes on in System Preferences and now my notes have two iCloud accounts and keep duplicating notes.

I can't even keep the Notes app open because it starts to freeze up my Mac. I tried removing iCloud, but that didn't work. This seems to be an issue with Mountain Lion. I'm totally bummed because I use notes more than every other app. I hope this gets fixed soon.

Annoying, I agree, and also hope Apple will push a fix soon.

In the meanwhile, if you make extensive use of Notes, there are some free third-party alternatives to consider.

First to consider is nvALT on your Macs and Simplenote on your iOS devices. The notes are also accessible and editable via Simplenote's web interface on any computer. They're both free and unlimited and sync sealessly and perfectly using Simplenote's free service. (There are premium packages, too, but unnecessary if you just want to get a working Notes clone.)

Another option is a pair of apps which will sync using iCloud. Byword for both Mac and iOS work well, and Byword is among one of the best text generators available, as well as an excellent word processor if you use markdown.

If you only need notes on one Mac without syncing, there are a ton of free options many of which are available in the Mac App Store. I've tried JustNotes, NotesTab, and Quick Note and they all work fine. (Just launch the Mac App Store and search on those names.)

You could also use any text editor you like (such as TextEdit on your Macs and, say, Nebulous Notes on your iOS devices) and sync using Dropbox. As long as you're happy using the Finder to sort and search your notes, this might be the best solution until Apple repairs this problem with Notes.

Same problem as everyone else: duplicate notes, but I guess that is better than losing them. Of course, when things don't go right with sync, data loss often comes next, so beware! Pre-ML upgrade, notes were syncing flawlessly with iCloud on 3 Macs and several iOS devices. Now it's a mess. Is there a quick way to quickly find the duplicates, so I can delete them and re-sync? I don't know for sure, but was a .Mac user and MobileMe user and think this just smells like yet another of the problems we early adopters have faced during each transition of these systems. So far though, that is the only glitch I have noticed from this upgrade so kudos for that!

Now, can you please deal with merging these Apple IDs, so we can all stop having these problems???
