Duplicate notes? Notes not syncing?

Is anyone having problems with duplicate notes in Mountain Lion?

When I first open up Notes.app on MacBook, I am greeted with "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with (my iCloud account)."

User uploaded file

I open iCloud Preferences, but everything looks fine.

And these settings are exactly the same on my iPhone 4S.

It looks like my MacBook thinks I have two iCloud accounts in the Note.app but I should only have one. Unchecking the Notes box in iCloud Preferences, only takes one iCloud account off of notes. So, even with iCloud turned totally off and signed out, my notes application still thinks I am signed in.

So when I add a noted from the MacBook, the note gets duplicated just seconds afterwards.

Sometimes it even makes three copies.

None of the notes from my Mac sync to my iPhone and none from iPhone sync to my Mac.

Sometimes, the application on the Mac will crash, interestingly enough exactly at the time when my iPhone and Mac *should* be communicating together.

I've got hat problem too.

At first I thought maybe Notes has a problem syncing through other services like Google, so I switched to iCloud only and worked 2 hours to get all notes properly arranged again on the Macbook. Now I opened Notes on my desktop mac, Notes performed and upate, and now it's a complete desaster again.

- On the source macbook...

- there are folders that now have only one entry when they had 10 before.

- I have several notes each one of which now exists 55 times!

- On the iMac...

- a lot of the notes from the Macbook are missing completely

- there is a new folder "Revoverd Items" but it's empty

Apple, this isn't funny. You're messing up our data! Please fix this!

I've read this whole thread but I haven't quite run across my exact problem. If I have a note called "Meeting notes" made on tues sept 3rd & I edit it on My Mac on Weds sept 4th I will then have two copies of this note on my phone. "meeting notes" sept 3rd & "Meeting note" sept 4th. The previous version only exists on my phone. it is not on my computer, nor if i look on the on the icloud website is it there. Why does my phone have problems syncing edits? it's really annoying. FYI I have tried turning off note syncing on my phone & then turning it back on. It removes the duplicates but does not prevent the phone from creating new duplicates anytime I edit on my mac.😠

What worked for me was ensuring no notes were being synced on my devices other than iCloud. After I saved all my notes via copy paste on my mac. Then I went into system preferences> mail contacts and calendars and clicked my icloud tab, and unchecked notes. I then deleted the notes that remained and it did delete all my notes in icloud as well (which is why I saved). Checked it again and the issue was fixed. I verified by making a new note on my iphone and it showed up seconds later with no duplicate. Also now under the Notes tab at the top left beside the black apple, it only shows one active account.

SOLUTION:

After reading Aremac's advice above ^^ I decided to do something similar. Instead of copy/pasting like he/she suggested, simply:

1. Go to System Preferences

2. Click iCloud

3. Click Sign Out

4. For each window asking you if you want to keep a copy of your contacts/mail/notes/documents/etc, click delete ( it will still be available on your other devices running iCloud and you it will all be restored in step 4. Sign back in and check all the boxes you want iCloud to sync.

The duplicate notes issue should be fixed, as well as the issue of if you are in the Notes app, if you click "Notes" in the menu bar next to the apple logo (top left), it will no longer display two different iCloud accounts.

Hope this helps. give is a thumbs up if it did so others can see it too. Peace.

I'm not sure if you were specifically responding to me but this did not work for me. I still create duplicates. Pretty much makes Notes in the icoud ridiculus. Also to clarify, if you were responding to me, I never had two different icloud acounts showing. I'm starting to believe that my issue is entirely then what some people have discribed above. It may actually be an inherent flaw in iCloud itself as i was having this problem on my 4S a month ago & am having the same problem on my 5. Apple needs to fix this.

The problem I have is similar to what many describe, yet just slightly different (I think). But I know they are all related. My problem is if I create a new note on my i-mac it will not sync to cloud, and obv. not to my iphone 5. BUT, if I make changes to an existing note it does sync. Worse, if I type a new note on i-mac, by the time I am done it has generated maybe 5 copies of itself, all in progressing stages of doneness. I do not have these issues when creating notes on either icloud or iphone.

@andymonsterman Unfortunatley switching iCloud Notes OFF does not solve my duplicate notes issue. I am using 1) IMAP corporate and 2) private Google account on Mac, iPad, iPhone.

At least Apple helps us with the latest battery drain problems on 6.0.1, so I won't see my duplicate notes when the phone is dead...

2012 brought the worst Apple experience I ever had 😠

I was having the same problem, and think I may have found a (temporary) solution. I went through system preferences => iCloud, then deleted both the @icloud & @me account, then just readded the @icloud account, since it seems to recognize that as the "default". The Notes applications seems to be working fine now, but it'll be a matter of time to see how long that lasts.

My original problem was that when creating a new note on my i-mac, it does not synch that new note to my other devices, and it still does not do that. The secondary problem was that AS I typed a new note on my i-mac, it would create multiple versions of itself, creating a new note every so often as I was typing, so that I might end up with 5 copies of the same note, all in varying stages of completeness. This has stopped.

But I can't tell you how much this infuriates me, that APPLE cannot fix this synch bug. If I EDIT an existing note on my i-mac, it synchs the changes to my other devices. But it will not synch the creation of a new note. If I create a new note on my i-phone, or edit a note on my phone, those all synch to my i-mac and my i-touch. So anything that anyone says to try does not make a difference. The problem is NOT that one of my devices is not synching with one of my other devices. There is a specific BUG, and that is APPLE's issue. Unfortunately, it is MY problem.

I had a very similar problem where only part of my iPhone notes were syncing to my iCloud account and then to my iPad. This article describes in detail why some people are unable to sync notes to iCloud.

In general you must be cautious not to create notes on your iDevice before actually enabling iCloud sync as that would push your new notes to your "On My iPhone" account which is un-syncable with the iCloud.
