Can you set a due date in Reminders on Mountain Lion?

It seems that there is no way to set a due date for a task in Reminders on Mountain Lion. In Lion in iCal you could set a Due Date that was different than the reminders you could set for a task. It seems obvious to me that reminders are different than due dates. Reminders can occur multiple times leading up to and on the due date (and perhaps even after a due date), but it is helpful to set a due date. Hopefully Apple will bring this functionality over to Reminders from the Lion version of iCal, as this is a downgrade in this one respect for me.

Barney, how do you create the template to include the Due Date field? I can copy the Reminder but the fields revert to the two new ones when I paste it into a new Reminder.

I think I now understand your question, but let me know if this is not the problem.

The idea behind the templat is you create a new reminder by copy/pasting the pre-built reminder, not paste that reminder into an existing reminder.

Once you paste the new reminder from the template, you can go in and edit the two date fields, topic, etc.

It sounds like you are creating a Reminder, then trying to copy the template reminder onto that. That will just replace what was in the Reminder you pasted onto.

Beware. My template disappeared. I believe it's because I had back dated it to keep it out of the current calendar views (a little OCD here)... not sure what the archival properties of the Reminders is. There used to be an option in Calendar to manage when old to-dos got deleted... but I thought they had to be completed.

Seems like there is some work to do, I hope Apple Dev sets a reminder, not sure what the due date will be 😉

I have my own way to set a due date on the reminder, but it requires the Dashboard widget "To Do", which you need to download from the net (sorry I forgot where I downloaded it, but Google is always there for you!). The to-do list that you make on this widget will appear as reminders on the Reminders app. The widget allows you to set priorities, which are similar to Reminders, as well as DUE DATES.

Now, what happens when I set a due date on the To Do widget? Well, the answer is the due date appears on the Reminders app! Refer to the screenshots below. However, when I uncheck the due date on the Reminders app, it will either become unchecked or it will become unchecked AND disappear. If that happens, the only way to get it back is to set a due date on the To Do widget. That's the only way I know about setting a due date to a reminder.

Here's another workaround.

1. Open Automator, create a new Service with the New Reminders Item step set to include a due date:

2. (optional) Assign a keyboard shortcut in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcut -> Services

When you run it, you'll get a Reminder with an independe Due Date and Remind Me Date:

I wish there was a way to do it on iOS 😟

Following jaydisc's good idea, make a Service that accepts text from any Application and set the Show this Action when the workflow runs. That way, the reminder uses your selected text as the Title and displays all the options for you to set. You can leave the Title blank, or put something in, but it always takes the selected text, even if you type something new. If you leave off the title as depicted below, the dialog box is not sized correctly, so everything goes kind of wonky.

If you want to be able to set the title, use the "Ignore this actions's input" and leave the Title field available.

Another good due-date option I just discovered is a free app (in the app store) called Remind Me, which gives you a keyboard hot key and a menubar icon for adding reminders quickly. It offers a due date field, and lo and behold, when you create a reminder in this way it shows up in Reminders with an actual due date! Shows up this way in iCloud too.
