no Airplay Icon

I have upgraded to Mountain Lion but cannot see the Airplay Icon anywhere except in iTunes, therefore I cannot perform mirroring. Do I have to setup somewhere else? I can use my AppleTV for iTunes only?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

How old is your Mac? Only 2011 models are supported as well as apple TV 2nd generation I believe.

I bought mine a month before the new generation came out.

At this stage, I would much rather take a decrease in overall performance when projecting rather than not having that feature available at all.

I understand that some software emulation would have to compensate on older models but if some third party airparrot can do it, so can apple.

I know it doesn't fall in the perfectionmist OCD schema that apple got us used in their equipment. But some features are just so important. AirPlay is the sole reason I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I need to present from laptop wirelessly in classrooms to students. And now I am looking at a $999 investment to do that....

I hope this get's fixed. After buying a piece of equipment like this I expect to use it for a while to feel that is brough a return on investment. Apple did a great job so far in accomodating their latest OS on older devices in iPhone and iPad line of product. If they could do this in their mac products it would be great.

Thank you! And btw, the new iCloud integration across devices is awesome!

I'm absolutely disgusted that 18 months ago, I spent £2,800 on a brand new iMac. I have the latest OS, Mountain Lion, and an Apple TV 3rd Generation purchased 2 months ago, and I cannot use AirPlay Mirroring. What a ****** trick, the mid 2011 iMacs are no different to late 2010 iMacs, so this is obviously just some ******** restriction Apple have put in place to make people buy new Macs. Do they expect me to pay nearly 3k on a new Mac every year just so I can use the latest features? Dreadful.

I have a mid-2010 MBP and am equally frustrated that Apple left me out of this feature. They are clearly pushing me out of their feature's list in order to prepare me for purchasing another piece of hardware. This is not cool and one of the shortcomings of this company.

Thanks for the Airparrot recommendation. Just downloaded it and it works great for all my media (videos/pics/apps/etc) without showing any lag on my MBP or my TV.

I am not sure that this is any comfort, exactly, but I have brand new stuff - IMac, Apple TV, OS - and I still cannot get the Airplay icon top right. Works from my IPhone, but not from IMac or Macbook Air. I have been wondering - there are two Win7 laptops on the same network. Could it be that they somehow inhibit the Apple TV function?
