Q: Macbook Pro screen becomes blue every time a discrete graphics card is used!

The screen color of my 2011 17" Macbook Pro changes to blue-ish every time the discrete graphics card is used! That started to happen only after I upgraded to OS Mountain Lion!

Whenever I open any app that use Discrete graphics card by default, the screen becomes blue and looks terrible.. Applications include, VLC, Chrome (20.0) and I guess quite a few others!

So now efectively my Macbook Pro has just one usable video-card - the buit in one, because the discrete card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M) is not usable!

Here's some other forums set up about this problem, so it's not just me:

Disable automatic switching, logout, login and enable it again...that works for me...until the next reboot. Thank god i'm not running Windows, so it at least lasts for a while

    Nope, ain't working...

I have to disable it then do a full reboot. After the reboot i enable it and everything is fine. I just have to remember to disable it again before I shut down my mac. A bit of a pain but usually I don't shut it down for weeks and just let it go to sleep...

    Try that with windows

i just started having this problem. i think it's some file dealing with graphics/color that is getting corrupt. this just started after hard booting my mbp. i've got an ssd but no file vault enabled and i'm on 10.8.4.

if updating solved the problem it's possible that the update cleaned up whatever file was corrupt and same with disabling graphics switching. it could be corrupt cache? i'll try some stuff and report back if i find anything.

Each time I use Windows 7 64bits (French) under bootcamp, this problem cames back. Need to reset the SMC after each bootcamp uses. Under 10.8.4 this bug is STILL there.

I'm starting to have this problem also.

I bought my Macbook Pro in 2011, with a stock SSD installed. Later that year I took out my stock SSD and put in an OCZ VERTEX 3. I never had any issues until a couple of days ago and I used my Macbook at home, on my TV and at the office with an external monitor. A couple of days ago I did a Apple Hardware Test just for the sake of it and it found an error with the SSD. I repaired the permissions on my SSD and after that I started having the issue.

This is the only thing I did - the Apple Hardware Test followed by repairing permisions for the first time since I bought my Macbook Pro. I guess this is why I started having this problem.

This problem just showed up for me last week.  I recently installed an SSD, but the blue screen issue didn't show up until a few days after it was installed (or at least, I didn't notice until then).  I also have FileVault 2 enabled.  I do not have Aperture or even Adobe Flash installed.

I'm heartened to know this doesn't appear to be a GPU issue, but find myself increasingly disillusioned with all the problems I've encountered since switching to a Mac.  I spent way too much money on this computer, and have put in too many upgrades, to have these silly issues keep cropping up.  My ThinkPad A31 from college still runs without issues, and the thing is over ten years old and has survived countless beer/wine spills.  Where is this vaunted Apple quality I kept hearing about before switching?

My machine stats (to help diagnose):

    • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (15 inches)
    • 16GB RAM
    • Crucial m500 SSD, 480GB
    • OSX 10.8.4

    Sincerely,

A customer questioning why he bought a Mac

Unfortunately, if the theory that using a non-Apple SSD in conjunction with Filevault 2 results in the blue tint , I fear that we will not get a solution from Apple. History shows that they are not at all an open company by any stretch. They do not allow one to control their own device at a level they (Apple) have deemed unacceptable. Simply look at the consistent approach to marginalize Jail Breaking of iPhones. Why not just charge the price of a new iPhone to repair one that has been bricked and let people do what they want with the device that they purchased??? Enough rant...

Basically, they have no reason to resolve this issue when they went out of their way to make sure that the TRIM function only works with genuine Apple SSD's. They want to sell more Apple SSD's and they only want Genius Bar folks to install them.

    Example:

I just purchased a 2012 MacBook Air for my wife and we had it all of 17 days and the SSD died. It was 15 days out of Apple warranty and when I called the local Apple store I was told that they would not sell me the bare OEM drive. They had to install it. What? It has no warranty and I cannot even purchase and install the OEM drive myself? The price - $759.00 for a 128GB drive. The alternative they gave me - trade the Air in on a new one.

I will say that when I called Apple support line and spoke to a supervisor, they agreed to cover the repair 100% as it was only 15 days past the warranty end. Quite frankly, this is why we still have the Apple products in our house.

Don't hold your breath that this will be resolved in any patch or any future release of OSX. I'll wager that it will not.

What caused my "blue screen" issue:

The laptop ran too hot for too long causing damage to my Motherboard and/or Video Card as I suspected.

    The Fix:

Replace integrated motherboard.  Laptop (no longer under applecare) was sent out for a flat rate repair.

Repair Cost $480.  The price for part alone from ifixit was ~$1k, so it was a good deal.

I was having the same problem, but realized I have 2 color profiles set up in settings.  I simply erased the calibrated profile and clicked on the box hiding all profiles not supported by my mac.  I have a Late 2011 17" with the AMD Radeon 6750M and Intel graphics card too.  I found that when the system would switch to the AMD card it would use the calibrated color profile.  To fix this I did:

    1.  Go to settings.

    2.  Click on displays.

    3.  Click the color tab.

    4.  Check mark the box "show profiles for this display only"

    5.  On the box where it lists the profiles make sure it only lists color LCD.  Delete the calibrated profile and any others.

    6.  Go back to the settings screen and click the energy saver button.

    7.  Select automatic graphics switching, and now when it uses either card it will use the same color profile.

Hope this helps.  It worked for me!

MBP early 2011 i7 2Ghz - Similar problems - as long as I am in discrete mode the machine works... so far.

HOWEVER ... in order to get it to boot up at all I have to change memory (I originally thought one of the SIMMs was fried, since at least it booted after I degraded ram to my older 2x2GB SIMMs), but then it happened again.   Last night when I left it running the screensaver was working happily on both monitors, but this morning it wouldnt boot (either straight or with Shift-D).

It also worked in SAFE mode last night until I got brave and switched to regular mode, but I knew it wouldnt last until morning ...

I normally run _many_ applications at the same time as well as Parallels/Windows 7 in advanced graphics mode.

As soon as one of the applications which requires discrete interface full memory (384?) is required (or perhaps when discrete interface accesses some of its corrupted memory) the screen goes grey or black or stripes on one of the monitors and kernel panic sets in.

I need to work with an external monitor so nothing will help.  Genius Bar only appointment in 4 days...  I suspect the mainboard needs to be changed but I am going to have to work through 30 minutes of questions to tell me what I know already.  Then wait for how long ... need a loaner

Hello, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but I had this problem and was able to get it to go away...

Install  gfxCardStatus  if you havent already. First make sure System Preferences is closed. Then use gfxCardStatus to set to the higher power card ( Discrete Only ). Open System Preferences and go into Energy Saver. There should be a difference where it normally says 'Automatic graphics switching' with a check box in front of it, it will instead have selection options for "higher performace" or "better battery" life. Pick higher performance. It will still switch between the cards fine just without the tint change.

This option only appears if you enter system prefs then energy saver while using the higher power card.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Nathan

(also you dont really need gfxCardStatus, you just need to make sure the higher power card is running)

The best fix I found is either :

    - log out and log in again OR

    - urn OFF automatic login in "accounts" system prefs. Each time you boot you have to type your password, but I get rid of this blue screen for good !

Hi everyone. I have had the same annoying problem for quite some time and this is how I fixed it (up until now at least). Try booting in safe mode by holding the shift key. After that do a normal restart. Hope it helps!

I have just updated to Mac OS Lion 10.8.5 and this is happening to me! I confirm the log on and log off works but I hate to do it everytime.

I did not have to do any of these before... Why do I have to now? Apple please reply...
