Mail under Mountain Lion is painfully slow / unusable

I started this on a separate list. Someone suggested posting to the ML group so here goes. Take a look at:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4142266

To summarize again:

The upgrade to Mountain Lion went smoothly but Mail works really badly afterwards.

  • When sending an email, it takes a few minutes before the mail goes out. And that's with any size message.
  • Auto-completion of mail addresses while composing takes multiple minutes. Even after it finally comes up with a list of email addresses, pressing enter on one also takes minutes to acknowledge
  • At various times, hitting the mail icon on the dock has no effect. The same is true with Command+TAB

Overall, the unresponsiveness is painful and making me wish I hadn't upgraded

I use Mail for work as well as home. It's now making my work day completely useless as composing and sending a single email now takes about 5 minutes (regardless of the size of the email).

Slightly different twist, here.

Same symptoms - slow, unusable Mail. I do not have iCloud setup, but have Soocial to sync my contacts across various devices.

I tried to apply the suggested fix, but since I do not have iCloud, I simply renamed my Applications Support folder for the Address Book to "old Address Book" restarted my MBA and now works perfectly without any other operation.

The AB was (and still is) completely populated, but it cannot have been rebuilt by Soocial (1200+ records)

Go figure, but problem solved, happy camper again!

do you have time machine back ups? are your addresses backed up to the icloud?

actually before we go any further can you please relay to me exactly what your issue is again.

one thing you could do is to is to export your address book to a safe location.

then delete verything in your address book.

repair permissions

restart

open up contacts and import the address book from your save file.

Thanks for replying. The trouble is that it deletes and goes to trash. When I try to empty trash I get a message saying it won't delete addressbook-v22.abcddb as it's in use, even though there are no other applications running. When I restart the computer the whole file is back in place in library. How can I force it to delete the file or find out what it's in use with?

I must say my faith in Apple has been reduced by all this.
