Upgraded to mountain Lion Heating issues

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and I can feel the heat of my Imac from 4 feet away. I cannot touch the top or back of the Imac as it is now too hot to touch and i can now hear the fan working very hard.

Thanks for the info, Ivan Clarke1.

I can understand indexing going on for an extended period of time after a major installation.

But what bugs me here are those short bursts activity which suggests – in my non-professional mind – a process that crashes immediately after it is initiated and then restarts and gets caught in an endless loop.

This is suggested by the total absence of feedback whatsoever from the Spotlight Menu-extra and Search text field.

Though I am curious: Any ideas as to what fans are dealing with what problem, and thusly: which should be monitored?

It would seem like they are all going crazy, should I view this as purely blind, or this to be triaged? Activity Monitor showed no abnormailty besides unsettling HDD behavior...

Edit: Oh do I miss the days of having a case to open.

Had the same issue, thought it was due Spotlight reindexing data, but it lasted several days.

Try to open Activity Monitor, click CPU and you will see what is loading your processor the most. Try to stop that process.

In my case it was TVMobili app, probably incompatible with ML. I have uninstalled it together with all related files and now its much better.

In my case, as I mentioned earlier, it is mdworker that is using almost 100% of CPU usage. I should say WAS using almost 100% of CPU usage. Because I think I definitely fixed the problem.

I had installed Mountain Lion 10.8 over a Lion 10.7.4 clone on an external drive so as not to nuke my internal 10.7.4 in case something went wrong.

As all went well, and after a day or two of testing and updating, I "Carbon Copied" my working brand new Mountain Lion back to my internal drive. And that is when this mdworker 100% CPU usage started the overheating problem.

This morning, I remembered that yesterday, while cloning back my Mountain Lion installation to my internal drive, I had declined Carbon Copy's invitation to also create a 10.8 recovery partition, thinking that it wouldn't be of any use.

I then decided to start over Mountain Lion's cloning to my internal drive, but this time, WITH the installation of the 10.8 Recovery Partition.

I don't know how to explain – or if there is a link – but Mountain Lion is now working flawlessly on my internal drive, and mdworker seems happy and has been quiet for more than 2 hours now. My processor's temperatures went down from a steady 55-58 C yesterday to a mere 32-34 C eversince.

Anybody knows if there is a link between Spotlight indexation os a Mountain Lion partition and the existence or not of its relevant Recovery partition ?

Same heating problem (and battery drainage). I upgraded my macbook air summer 2012 to ML on last Friday. The first 2 days were okay. Yesterday (Monday), I fully charged it, and when I was off from work, I unplugged and made it to sleep. Around midnight, when I wanted to use it for some work, I found it to be warm and even heated up the documents put next to it in my bag. The battery drained to ~50%. I used it for ~20 min without plugging in (only for internet and reading some ducuments). This morning, I got to plug it to power so I could wake it up!
