J456, while your info was helpful, it's not working for me!
I checked "Prevent search engine from providing suggestions" but a drop down shows up, complete with bookmark history, which is totally annoying.
And Private Browsing doesn't seem so private anymore. While history isn't stored, when I do a search, I get a drop down auto suggesting things from history or bookmarks. I don't understand it. Never used to happen before.
😠😢😮

Its plain annoying!
I want to deciede when to google (or whatever) and when to input a URL. And after all from one to the other it's just a TAB or SHIFT+TAB away!
Please, Apple, bring back the old style!
Yes, I also had a chat with Apple support today about it.
It has made Safari largely useless to me, and for most things I have abandoned it in favour of FireFox.
I canot access my prototype websites as I'm routed through Google, and the prototypes are specifically designed not to let Google index them (I don't [articularly want test sites being indexed by Google!)
But this is also a realy bad idea for several logistical reasons:
1) I consider it a violation of one's privacy to force all access to go through Google search. 19 out of 20 times I type in an URL to get to a site. It is only occasionally that I am interested in doing a search.
2) You can't access everything
3) It makes accessing what you want far more time consuming if you type in an URL, have to find what you really wanted in the first place by reviewing search results, and then navigate to the destination. A three second request now becomes a 15 second request...
Wake up Apple! Let us turn this nonsense off.
Apple is going backwards!! Turning into another Microsoft!
No mater how hard we all complain here, apple will not change this back to the way it was, they think they know best. Our opionios mean **** to them.
More people at Apple need to get fired and maybe then we'll see some improvements.
Wake up Apple, you're going backwards!
Good info, J456, but I'd like to know something:
Look at your screenshot of the dropdown menu after you typed in "app".
See how "bookmarks and history" show up?
Is there a way to prevent that from happening? It just adds to my confusion as I have so many bookmarks and history.
I'm wondering if there is a simple way to prevent the search from bringing up the "bookmarks and history" when searching for something? Thanks.😕😮

It's easy to understand why Google does this for Chrome - they want to drive traffic towards their website.
It's very hard to understand why Apple have added this behaviour to Safari. I (and many above) do not wish to have everything I type sent to Google when I'm loading a website.
The specific answer is simple - revert to Safari 5.1.7 (thank you poster above!) or change to FireFox.
The remaining question: what is Apple thinking?
I just use Firefox now. Added a skin to it to make it look all nice and OSX-native, I have separate search and address bars, AND I have a bookmarks sidebar (Safari is FINALLY getting that, only 12 years after everyone else had it) but it'll still have the unified search/address bar so I won't be using it when I upgrade, either.
Another reason why one box is not a substitute for two is that when I've gone to the effort of typing in my search, and then navigated to one of the results, I might want to search again, now or later, in a new tab perhaps, with slightly different criteria. I shouldn't have to navigate back to the search results page and scroll to the top to do this.
Im joining the ranks of those who hate this "feature" (I use that term very sparingly), I had just come back to safari, now I find myself leaving again. Its unfortunate that, freedom to choose your style hasnt been offered. They have a developer mode, why not have this be part of that or something, just stupid on Apples part, I fear they are heading down the microsoft path.
I'd like to add my voice. I'm getting an iPhone, moving to Apple apps for mail, calendar, browsing (have been using Android, gmail, Firefox, ...) but this seemingly minor change is a major irritation. I want a separate search box. Please Apple, put the funcionality back into Safari.
Apart from the initial RAID gobbling issue, which I am sure will be fixed, this is the primary reason I have not upgraded to Mavericks AND NEVER WILL. I have cludged 5.1.7 onto Mountain Lion - it works fine, but the installation is far from simple. Elsewhere in these boards I am told you cannot cludge 5.1.7 onto Mavericks - unless anyone here knows different?? I am baffled why Apple haven't even the good grace to offer a two box option on 6 and 7 - who is bribing them to go via Google or is it another NSA friendly feature? If someone can offer me a good alternative to Safari that looks and feels like 5.1.7 then I may reconsider, but for the moment Apple itself is stopping me from updating my OS and, by dint of that, my laptop.
Snow Leopard is actually the pinnicle of MacOS, after that : it is all downhill. Certainly there are nice features post SL, but there are also debilitating additions and blatent retardations. SL represents the most polished & carefree edition of OSX since its conception.
Unfortunately we are unlikely to ever see improvement in this OS from now on - Mac OS has now fully transitioned to mainsteam pulp & we join the likes of 'Avril Lavigne', 'The Fast & the Furious' & 'Americas next idol'
Remember that moment when your favourite band actually became famous? You always wanted them to get more recognition, how come no one can see how cool they are?
.....& then they sold out & became totally ****.
In case you wonder - the reason is thus:
From OS 7x onwards Apple always made efforts to make each OS update run more EFFICIENTLY on your computer. Since 1998 I have always seen a great speed boost with each OS update. Even though my computer, at the time, is getting older. It was a wonderful bonus to see it getting sharper & more responsive with each edition of OSX.
After Snow Leopard, that attituide changed. The primary goal was to make new computers work well & screw the old ones, "make them buy new! "
I wound up here searching for how to disable the unified address/search bar, almost 2 years after the original question. I've been using Firefox most of that time, but recently have discovered it's doing a horrible job with RAM. I was going to come back to Safari, but to my dismay I found that I can't separate the address & search bars.
And it's been like this for how long?! I can hardly believe it! But then again, given the direction Apple has gone over the last few years it's not really a surprise. I guess humanity has descended to a place where nobody even knows what a URL is, much less how to type an entire one in anymore. I'm not going to waste my time looking for a solution from Apple, because obviously they don't care at all. It's such a shame, because I used to love this company, but now it's just one thing after another. Riquez above me is right that Snow Leopard was about the best OSX, and after that it's become a bloated OS with bugs and all sorts of issues. So long AMD processors. Hello programs that run in the background (like Google updaters) that hijack your system and tell YOU when to update, as opposed to you being in control. And forget about controlling your browser. Nope. That's for the 'Genius' bar. Oh well. I mean having people evangelize your products without even having to pay them to advertise was a nice idea, but I guess selling crap is a better one.
I really HATE when people are so arrogant to make statements such as "it is for the better" when they're talking about something that is 100% SUBJECTIVE! This, like the recent Firefox 29 GUI redesign, is entirely a matter of behavior not function. This is a matter of how you do something, not whether or not you can do it. To say "it is better" is to dismiss the preferences of other person being addressed entirely. I can't stand that kind of thing. If you like something better, fine… but don't tell me (or anyone else) that it's better as if their opinion is irrelevant b/c it differs from your opinion. 🙂
