I am not really sure what's causing this but every time I start my MacBook Pro I get at least 2 processes with this name that keep my processor at at 100% and more. It only happens on my MacBook Pro and I noticed this after I updated to Mountain Lion the other day. There is no trace of these on my iMac though also updated to Mountain Lion.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion, 2.2 GHz, Core i7 15"

Thank you guys A LOT for solving this... I've been going up and down google for ages, trying to figure this out. Even called Apple support but I have to say here they weren't helpful at all. It seemed their strategy would have been to reinstall OSX.

And the other traces on google led me to converting all my .flv clips to mp4s, putting all movies on a seperate hard drive and so on.... what a pain.

So I can confirm too that deleting the DraftSight qlgenerator did the trick. Maybe I'll write a mail to 3ds so they bring an update on DraftSight thats solves the issue.

Thx again

Terrific response, which solved my CPU issues by deleting all of DraftSight. Don't bother trying to contact Dassault Systems, the author of the offending software. I tried several times to report this as a bug using various methods. The response was usually from someone appalled that I would contact the wrong department "Support". The follow-up was to ask for my credit card to pay them for extended support to "solve my problem".

I get it. DraftSight is free, but I have other forms of industrial, CAD software, so it's expendable. It was nice for a quick preview of DWG files. SolidWorks & AutoCAD WS, are pretty slow for preview, but the CPU issue was too much for me.

Glad I found this thread.

I installed ARES Commander CAD and things started to go haywire with the fans running flat out. Checked the processes and found the QuicklookSatellite_Legacy process going nuts at near 400%.

/Applications/ARES Commander Edition.app/Contents/Library/QuickLook/FxQuickLookDrawing.qlgenerator/Contents/ MacOS/FxQuickLookDrawing

Deleted the qlgenerator and the problem was solved.

The common thread in this is 3DCAD previews. Not something I need anyway.

Looks like CAD programs (probably a lot of them ported from a junk version from another platform) seem to be common culprits. Corel CAD, apart from being a piece of trash, also had a quicklook process running that was causing the QuickLookSatellite-legacy to run at over 100%. I quickly uninstalled this and after a restart, the problem is gone. Also found abrick to smack myself in the head with the next time I think of installing anything from Corel, AutoDesk, and the like.

In 20123 haven't we moved beyond this kind of crapware? Surely there is a big opportunity for a smart CAD software developer to create a native 3D CAD app. Just about to head over to the AppStore to submit feedback on Corel CAD.

I just found this and managed to capture the following but i do not know how to figure out the offending item, do you have any suggestions?

An update - Problem still not fixed

I have just installed DraftSight Service pack V1 R3.1 and it includes a new FxQuicklookDrawing module dated 28 Dec 2012.

The QL Satellite problem is still present and 100% CPU process kicks in again. If you install the service pack you'll have to delete the QL module again as per above instructions.

FWIW my 2011 Macbook Air was experiencing the same issue, with the quicklooksatellite-legacy consuming all of the CPU and running my fan nonstop. I too had recently installed Draftsight. Killing the quicklooksatellite-legacy process and running qlmanage -r has repeatedly fixed the problem, although the CPU/fan issue would mysteriously return, requiring tme to run the aforementioned fix again. I finally just uninstalled Draftsight to see if it fixes the issue once and for all.

Hope this helps somebody, because the fan noise is simply maddening.

I've been having similar problems with QuickLook Helper for what seems like years. I've narrowed it down to when I plug in my iPHone 5 and iPhoto starts up to import photos, QuickLoook Helper fires up and takes up tons of resources which makes the iPhoto import process really slow. I then force quit QLHelper, but it immediately reopens which again slows imports.

I've also noticed that QLHelper starts up when I use DownloadHelper on Firefox to download internet videos (from YouTube, etc). It happens every time I use that app. So what's the adivce on this particular situation? I'd like to get rid of QuickLook Helper altogether as I NEVER use it and NEVER have.

In fact, the only reason that I know I have it is because of all of the memory it hogs up at what seemed like random times.

Any input would be appreciated.

Keith,

I think the original issue has been blurred by respondents commenting on QuicklookSatellite_Legacy issues (as I did) which is slightly different than the original post. The original post has been marked as solved but the thread now seems to be focused on the QuicklookSatellite_Legacy issue which seems to be common to a lot of CAD 3D applications for the Mac. They include Draftsight, CorelCAD, iCadMac, ARES Commander and there may be others.

One comment makes the statement that Draftsight and CorelCAD are based on ARES Commander and I already know that iCadMac is based on ARES Commander.

Users with the QuicklookSatellite_Legacy issues might be interested in the following given that ARES Commander seems to be the common denominator.

I purchased a licence for ARES Commander and in the last week I was notified of an update which re-installed the glgenerator I had previously disabled. I noticed immediately that the CPU was being hogged by the QuicklookSatellite_Legacy process I could see in Monitor. There were two processes running at 375% and 300% each. The CPU fans were running flat out with the CPU temperature at 90 degrees Celsius and the CPU Diode at 85 degrees Celsius.

I logged a job with Graebert (the developers in Germany) including the notes that the process kicked off when I accessed subfolders on my Macbook that were unrelated to CAD drawings. In other words the process kicked off whenever I moved around in Finder. The job was marked as Critical and yesterday I received advice that a Service Pack will be issued later this month to address the issue.

It could be that this may ripple through to iCadMac, CorelCAD, Draftsight and any other application based on ARES Commander.

Cheers

Just to bump this (found this thread through Google) - had the exact same issue, and did the exact same fix, but I'm not sure which of two CAD programs was the cause: I had DraftSight installed, as well as Rhinoceros. Additionally piece of info is that I haven't done any work in DraftSight and so don't have any files, but I did do some drafting in Rhinoceros, and it's the first thing in "all my files" when I open a new finder window.

Rather than trashing the plugins, I just compressed them and deleted the uncompressed versions, and that solved the CPU issue.

It appears the latest ML update changed the program that searches for movie files from qtkitserver to qtkittrustedmoviesservice. So the same problem with multiple processes endlessly sucking up CPU and getting stuck on some avi or flv files started again.

My workaround was to edit this new file:

sudo vi com.apple.qtkittrustedmoviesservice.sb

and the same old file:

sudo vi com.apple.qtkitserver.sb

though not sure if the latter edit is necessary. Or use nano or some other editor if not familiar with vi commands.

Then add the following two lines to the end of each file:

(deny file-read* (regex #"^.*\.flv$"))

(deny file-read* (regex #"^.*\.avi$"))

How annoying this problem keeps perpetuating itself across multiple generations of OS X. How would an ordinary user ever be expected to fix a problem like this?
