Mountain Lion Folder Issues

After upgrading to Mountain Lion on my Retina MBP, I have had trouble navigating in Finder. When I select "Documents" in the sidebar, it just opens into the sidebar I was in prior (lets say "Music" for the sake of the question).

I've tried repairing permissions, killing Finder, restarting - nothing seems to fix this really odd behavior. I literally can't get into my Documents folder even by navigating to Users/username/Documents.

Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me mad.

Have you tried moving the Finder sidebar prefs and forcing it to create a new one? Much easier than 'dowbgrading' IMHO. ;-) Just about everything on the OS has at least two pref files; one for the standard System settings and another in each users Library. All you have to do is navigate to yours and move it to the Desktop. Restart the app and it will create a new, fresh one. In the case of the Finder, you'll have to 'kill' it in a slightly different way. One easy way is to use the "Force Quit" function.

This was also posted on the YouTube video. Problem solved! Big thanks to xairbusdriver and arkiefyler from YouTube for the tip.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. From desktop select "Go" in the menu bar and type "~/Library/Preferences/" without the quotes.

2. Move the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist to your desktop.

3. Open terminal and type "killall Finder" without the quotes.

4. Voila, problemo solved until it gets a patch, or maybe it is just a preferences anomoly that only a few were hit by.

This is a load off.

(UPDATE: After a brief lapse, the Desktop sidebar icon will still revert to display the applications folder, etc. The problem was alleviated, but not solved yet. 😟 )

I think you'll have the problem as long as you stick with icon view. Try one of the other choices, they both supply much more info about the file/app/whatever than the simple pictures do, anyway. There is soon to be an update to ML, but I have no idea if this bug is addressed or not. Sorry.

BTW, it's often handy to have your user Library available without the steps of using the "Go to..." hoops. Just use that method one more time to display your Library (preferably in List or Columns View... hint, hint) and then drag the Library folder into your sidebar. It will be there until you upgrade or drag it out of there. ;-)
