I want the Birthday Calendar on my iPhone but it's very annoying that it shows past birthdays going back a year or more, Does anyone know how do I stop the calendar showing past birthdays?

There is no way to do so.
Why is this so annoying and how often do you check past events?
I use my calendar every day as I'm disabled with cancer and I have different hospital or doctors appointments nearly every day.
I've got the birthdays on as my memory has been severely affected by this but when I open the calendar it has the past birthdays/anniversaries and I find the extra entries sometimes confusing.

Birthdays and repeat events such as anniversaries will be shown in the past and present, just as with any other available past calendar events.
I'm not going back a year, the birthdays won't delete from the calendar once they've passed.
You said it is showing past birthdays, which means past.
The Birthdays calendar shows birthdays for contacts with a birthdays entry in the Contacts app. It shows the birthday for such a contact this year, the following year, and for the previous or past year.
Allan, Paul may be wanting to do the same thing I'm wanting to do which is just delete the birthday. When you open up a birthday reminder there is no "edit" or "delete" option. I want to take numerous birthday reminders off my calendar, how do I do this?
Remove the birthday entry for the contact in the address book or Contacts app.
Hi Friend,
To cancel Birthdates events, go to Calendars app>>Tap Calendars, then tap Birthdates events. This will turn off all birthdates reminders.
