Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

So here’s an update on how the genius bar apt went. It started off good with only a 2 min wait. The genius that was helping me was very friendly and listened intently when I described the lagging issues and the troubleshooting that I had done. I told him I contacted AppleCare in December about this problem and was told to wait for an update for a fix and that has come and went with no improvement. I then told him I had run a clean install, without transferring any data to the mac or setting up my iCloud, and the lag was still present. I informed him that an SMC reset and PRAM reset would temporarily alleviate the issue. He informed me that he had never heard of this particular issue, but knew of the safari lag issue and knew that it was being updated to improve scrolling.

I was successfully able to demonstrate the lag to him and he wanted to compare it to a display model. The display model was the base early 2013 and mine is the base model mid 2012. We both acknowledged that the base model was smoother in the UI and didn’t show any lag. Comparing them side by side we both could see the lag in my retina.

He stated that he believes that it is a software issue, but hasn’t heard if Apple recognizes the issue and is currently working on it. But, to be safe he recommended that I leave the computer with them and they would run their extensive hardware testing that would run for two days straight to make sure everything is performing as expected with the machine.

So, basically I left it with them and should hear something in 2-3 days. He said if they find a problem with any of the hardware that it would be repaired for me. Kind of discouraging cause it was clear that something was wrong with my machine. I hope they find a hardware problem that may resolve it.

I wonder if now would be a good time to swap the logic board. Maybe after so many months anything built now would be a fix? :)

Last year I had Apple replace my motherboard three times with no resolve, plus they replaced my entire laptop, wven the replaced unit carried the same symptoms. This has been aggravating for months, and with Apple liquidating their current line of retina laptops, looks like their trying to dust this problem under the rug :(

They contacted me yesterday. I need to make a new video showing the lag still occurs after the updates.

Just an update. I was contacted by the Apple Store this morning and they stated that they ran their tests and didn't find anything. But, the person that contacted me said they can clearly see that their is an issue with my machine, so they are sending it to a repair facility for more extensive testing. She informed me that they would most likely swap the flash storage to see if that is creating the issue (she informed me of this because she wanted to double check about a backup and make sure I had a current one at home). She said this will take 2-3 days before I hear anything about the machine.

Replacing the machine is just a bunch of bull. It's not a problem with the ram or ssd. Clearly bad algorithms for font rendering (and display buffers) or bad

Did you not read my first post about my visit? We compared my machine to in store display models. The in store models didn't present the UI lag like mine. It may be a software issue with certain hardware. Maybe the software isn't working well with certain manufacturer flash storage or ram. If it was a basic software rendering issue then all machines would be plagued with this problem and with my own eyes I saw two models with flawless UI. No stutter or lag.

The apple stores machine are modified versions, you can ask the guys there.

I agree they probably are modified, but if they are modified to misrepresent the product and make it appear better then what it is thats called illegal and unethical. But, to keep this on track Apple geniuses have stated my machine clearly has a problem. Hopefully, them sending it to this repair center will help them understand the issue better and resolve my problem, but all I can do is wait. Yes, I'm trying to look at the positives of this situation especially since my experience with Apple with this particular visit has been pleasant.

Why would Apple do something stupid like that? The only thing that's modified is its ability to run a demo movie after 5 minutes of inactivity. As stated several dozen posts before this, it was reported that there was an entire production line that created flawed MacBook Retinas. The solution should be that Apple ought to be recalling the flawed rMBP (easily identified by serial number) then have those units repaired or replaced with good hardware.

Wow I can't believe its back to this.. the computers at the Apple store - even after the minor refresh - have the same laggy UI as my August rMBP and my gf's July rMBP..

We both went into the store and played around with 3 differnt 15inch rMBPs, all of them had choppy Safari scrolling, laggy desktop transitions etc etc.. For people that go into Apple and think they've worked some magic to make just those units better - I am surely not seeing what you're seeing.. What I see is the same exact problems on their units as ours, which I can guarantee will be fixed with the next hardware refresh in summer..

This computer was just not tested enough before shipment and all of us that spent thousands have been handed a inferior product for the price and its tarnished Apple's own reputation.

I've seen that happend sometimes in safari, but very rarely on my rMBP. So far my rMBP is a performing nicely!

I had an apple genius appointment today and I too looked at the rMBP they had on display. They performed about as mine does. Noticebale lag in a lot of places.

To my great surprise (and dismay), the 13 inch rMBP on the other hand, performed much much better--and at its highest resolution setting. It was not 100% stutter free but very close to it. I loaded just about every application I could on it and opened about 8 spaces. It performed admirably. Much better than my 13 inch rMBP, which has 16gb of memory and discrete graphics.

My MBPR 15" started to have gigantic UI lag after the 10.8.3 + SMC 1.1 update. In mission control, when moving a window, the window movement was 5 seconds behind the mouse pointer, I was able to see the menu bar redrawing when switching desktop, ... It was even worst with the NVIDIA GPU compared to the HD 4000. I did many SMC reset, NVRAM reset, and I reinstalled the system and none of this fix the problem. I was really ****** off to have this kind of performance with a top of the line laptop.

I was almost giving up when I found a solution by chance:

• Downolad "Graphics Tools for Xcode - January 2013" (you probably need to have a developper account) from "https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action"
• Launch "Quartz Debug"

Maybe the following steps are useless, but it's what I did

• Tools -> Show Traking Rectangles
• Window -> FrameMeter
• I played a bit with the UI, switching desktop, moving windows, ...
• Quit Quartz Debug

All the problems gone, no more UI lags :-)))
