Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

The current UI problems have to do with the way Apple handles single-threaded CPU rendering. Hence the reason the Chromebook Pixel doesn’t lag with the same GPU.

Thought I would update you guys. I erased my entire flash storage including my bootcamp partition and reinstalled 10.8.3 clean from a usb drive. Ran through the setup and didn't even set up my iCloud. Just changed one setting in the preferences (touchpad setting) and looked at the energy saver settings which started out with graphic switching off. Turned it on and have opened some safari windows in full screen. Still see lag when switching between them and when entering Mission Control even with the graphic switching off. Then I shutdown did SMC reset and PRAM reset and restarted. Opened more Safari windows and still see lag, but not as severe as before SMC and PRAM reset. Definitely smoother with the Nvidia compared to the integrated Intel.

Could this be an indication that Apple is completely getting rid of the first generation Retina MacBook Pro line??? I really hope this is not their attempt to dust this problem under a rug and "move onto the next project"!!

Yes, I think that is exactly what its an indication of. However, it appears that the refresh released in Feb 2013 has the same problem so there is no reason to think that this problem will be "dusted" under a rug.

Ok I feel like I've found (I don't want to call it a workaround) a way to to make the animations smoother.

Before I had my dock hidden, but when I turn that off animations are really nice and smooth. Ideally, I would hide my dock, but I have just made it quite small with some magnification turn on.

I'm already used to the dock being there and am loving the butter smooth animations, but yes, I am on the nvidia so my battery life wont be great, but I can deal with it.

EDIT - just switched back to intel and even on that it seems smooth (with dock hiding off). PDF scrolling isn't as good, mail scrolling seems the same.

I don't know if this video has been posted here before, but this guy posted that video when the MacBook Pro Retina first came out. It is remarkably smooth with no lag or hesitation whatsoever.

I've never been able to achieve THAT kind of smoothness with my rMBP ever.

I wanted to jump through the monitor and steal his because mine has never looked that smooth. Also, Jimbobjoho I have never had dock hiding on and still see lag. I will try hiding the dock and see what that does. I have an appointment with the Genius bar on Thursday I will let you know how that goes.

That ***** Wayne. I've never experienced that issue that you showed in your video. And Jimbobjoho, after I turned on dock hiding, switching between spaces and full screen apps is slightly smoother with discrete and integrated, so my comp is the opposite of yours apparently.

edit: Wayne did you try an SMC reset and Pram reset to see if it resolves that issue?
