Mail bug in Mountain Lion

There seems to be a new bug introduced to Mail in Mountain Lion.

In Mail preferences, on the Composing tab, you can still set "Send new messages from account of selected mailbox." Unfortunately, this setting seems to have no effect and all new mail is sent by default from the first account in your mail accounts list.

Any idea how to work around this?

Thanks!

Perhaps 10.8.4 fixes the "Reply All" bug, but it DOES NOT fix the bug relating to replying to a message that is not currently in the inbox. Such a reply is addressed as from the default account, not the account to which the original message was addressed. Behavior: a message sent to account XYZ is placed in a folder, and a reply to that message is coded as from the default email account, not from account XYZ.

This was fixed for me in 10.8.3.

Me too, still fixed. And 10.8.4 just fixed the Reply to All bug. Pretty happy right now, except I still wish the Rules pane had some kind of filter/search. But that's a whole other topic. 🙂

I'm now running MacOS 10.8.4

The problem of having my email address automatically included in the "Cc" field of my reply seems to be fixed.

HOWEVER . . .

I'm still getting the same results as DPBest. Mail does not seem to be using the "X-Original-To:" header in order to reliably determine the proper "From:" address when replying to individually addressed emails AND emails that are received via participation in a mailing list. The 10.8.4 update does not seem to have fixed this!

Very interesting... as others have stated the REPLY TO bug was fixed in 10.8.3, and remains fixed for me in 10.8.4. Also, 10.8.4 has fixed the REPLY ALL bug, so as far as I am concerned, the REPLY function in Mail is working exactly as it should.

Big Rock is correct - Mail is not picking up the "X-Original-To:" header as the "from" account when replying to a messages that is not in the inbox. If the message is in the inbox, the reply is coded to the proper from account. If the message is in a folder other than the inbox, it picks up the default account for the reply rather than the account to which the original message was addressed. This is definately NOT fixed in 10.8.4.

While I agree they're not using that header, the patch prior to this one solved the problem of the correct From address being applied to messages that were moved out of the inbox. Many people posted the problem was fixed for them, myself included. Are you using a Mail rule that targets that header or something? You're talking about a method of fix that you dislike. What's the specific negative effect? Give us the symptoms.

It depends on how the message came to you. When I get an email directly to me, and it gets sorted into a box, then Reply does default to the correct address. This has been the case since the previous OSX update.

However, if I get an email that went to a google group (for example), and it gets sorted into a box, then the default address is not correct. In a case like this "To:" is the address of the list, not my email address. The correct address to default to is buried in the "Received:" header. (Or, mail could just keep track of what POP/IMAP account the message came in on in the first place.)

Thanks for the explanatiion. I'll test it with listservs and other masked email-distribution messages I get. This isn't a problem for me since I moved all my mailing lists to gmail where I access them from webmail, and my company exposes email addresses on Exchange mailing lists. But I could see where that would be a royal pain in other circumstances.
