Mail bug in Mountain Lion

There seems to be a new bug introduced to Mail in Mountain Lion.

In Mail preferences, on the Composing tab, you can still set "Send new messages from account of selected mailbox." Unfortunately, this setting seems to have no effect and all new mail is sent by default from the first account in your mail accounts list.

Any idea how to work around this?

Thanks!

Tested just now with a real world Reply All, and found that the message was not sent from the From that would be the default account. Furthermore, in a message that was sent to two of my addresses, it did not include either address in the To. The action to exclude multiple addresses that exist in your Mail Preferences -- long a feature -- seems to be correctly working.

Please report the settings in Mail Preferences/Composing at present?

See the posting by jesmith below for more specifics. My case is as described in that posting, to wit:

I belong to several Yahoo groups of special interest. Postings to that group are sent to my email account ABC and the "to" address is not my email address, but the generic email address for the Yahoo group in question. My real email address does appear in the header in the "Envelope-To: " line.

I have a rule that moves messages from the various groups (by looking at the subject line for a specific phrase) to a folder specific to that group. Replying to a message that's been moved to a folder is addressed as from my default email account, and not the email account to which the email was originally addressed (account ABC). If the message is left in the Inbox, a reply is properly addressed from account ABC.

This behavior changed when I upgrated from Snow Leopard to Mt. Lion. Prior to that upgrade, Mail worked correctly - sending replies from the account to which the message was originally sent irrespective of whether the message was in the inbox or a folder. The bad behavior was introduced in Mt. Lion and remains a bug.

This discussion is getting sidetracked by rules, and reply-to's. Try this simple test:

COMPOSE a new message. You need to have 3 accounts in mail for this test. The one that's constantly showing up as the reply-to address? Leave it out of the correspondence. Send a message from one account to the other.

Does the third account still show up as the reply-to? Okay, that's the problem.

Of your three accounts, are two of them gmail accounts? Yes...

Verify in Mail Preferences that the proper SMPT server is selected for each of the accounts. They are both identified in the drop-down only as GMAIL, so make sure you don't have the first one checked for both accounts, or the second one checked for both accounts.

Setting this straight solved this for me, and stopped my business account from being the default reply-to no matter what inbox was selected at the time. And personal replies cluttering my business inbox (ugh!)

This is not an Apple bug. It is a problem of creating a feedback loop through the two gmail accounts. Everything works properly when you set it up properly.

All 29 pages of wayward troubleshooting? This thread started out being about one thing, and branched into several things.

Dudette, I'm using 10.7.5 and allocating the proper SMTP servers fixed the problem.

As far as I can see, this thread is 90% speculation, and maybe 10% problem solving. Upgrading to 10.8.4 wont fix it if your SMTP servers are set wrong, so this needs to be done first.

Everybody LOVES to find a bug in Apple's coding, so they can stop working on the problem and wait for Apple to fix it.

I'd like it if this thread ended with a definitive solution to the problem, and it just doesn't. It goes deeper and deeper into rare cases of rules and behaviours, and nuances of different OS releases. Delightfully nerdy, but not solving the problem.

Glad you solved your problem, but it isn't the problem tracked by100s (prob. 1000s) of people watching this thread and others. There was a series of interrelated symptoms stemming from a change in the way Apple identified your return email address on replies. Apple acknowledged the bug, said it would fix it in an upcoming incremental release, and then did just that in 10.8.3. A related but less serious symptom was fixed in 10.8.4. The OP acknowledged that 10.8.3 did the trick for him.

That's pretty keen talent you have of being able to just know-it-all without reading a thread. Your post should have started a new thread.

With that, I'm unsubscribing to this thread.

The problem of having my email address automatically included in the "Cc" field of my reply seems to be fixed.

HOWEVER . . .

I'm still getting the same results as DPBest. Mail does not seem to be using the "X-Original-To:" header in order to reliably determine the proper "From:" address when replying to individually addressed emails AND emails that are received via participation in a mailing list. The 10.8.4 update does not seem to have fixed this!

As grateful as I am for the fixes in 10.8.3 and 10.8.4, I am now running 10.8.5 and the problem of not using the "X-Original-To:" header that I described on 6/6/2013 remains. This is a significant difference from the Mail's prior to the 10.8 release.

Hi,

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and after that I tried to start Mail. It opened (= visible in the menubar) but when I tried to open a window (with option-cmd N) it crashed repeatedly. After reading a number of post I tried several things. I finally got it running again. This is what did the trick for me:

- I deleted the 3 Envelope Index files that are in folder ~User/Library/Mail/Maildata.

- I moved all 3 folders that contain my 3 mailaccounts to the desktop. These folders normally are in folder ~User/Library/Mail.

- I moved folder Containers to my desktop. This folder rests normally in ~User/Library.

After this I started Mail up and it asked me to configure my mailaccount. I did this and thus got my main window - for the first time. There were directly a number of mailboxes: those that were stored in ~User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes (these were my smart mailboxes and archives) and also the mailboxes for the accounts (sent, received, drafts). The account-boxes were however without any content.

But from there I could manually import all my sent and received mails and drafts from the three mailboxes and drag them in the appropiate folders.

I hope this is of any help to anyone dealing with the same problems.

My problem with mail also started with the 10.7 or 10.8 update. It seems to be intermittent. I have 4 mail accounts. Mails get stuck in the outbox and won't send. Connection doctor shows full connection to all servers. Sometimes if I change to a different sender email or server it might be sent. Sometimes not. Eventually the emails are sent and the problem goes away for a while. It seems tha there is a daemon running which is responsible for the mail sending which gets hung up. Is that possible?

markmal,

Did you resolve this issue? I have the same problem. If I send new message, I can choose from which account I send via the drop-down menu under "Subject". Fine. But when I reply to an email sent to a particular account, I expect it to default to the account it was sent to. Instead, I have to choose each time which account I want to send from. Annoying.

I just upgraded to MacOS 10.9.1 Mavericks and I Mail still DOES NOT seem to by using the X-Original-To:" header in order to reliably determine the proper "From:" address when replying to individually addressed emails AND emails that are received via participation in a mailing list.

I would really like for Apple to address this!

I can't believe I am back here.... after 4 years.... this bug was fixed back in 2012, as I posted way way back early in this thread, but then I just noticed with a recent install of El Capitan, or as I call it, El Capican't, the bug is BACK!

Unbelievable. I have multiple email accounts. If I get a reply to an email, and it's sent to account C, say, then the DEFAULT From: from my pulldown list should be account C not account A. Man I cannot believe we have to go through this again.

Apple, WHY?
