Retina MacBook Pro wont wake from sleep

This issue is frustrating me to the point where I want to return it. About 1 in every 2 times when I try to wake this computer from sleep it will NOT respond to any mouse or keyboard action. The computer is still on (caps lock light works), but the screen just wont turn on. The only solution is to force shut off via power button and restart.

I turned off the "But hard drive to sleep" option in case its an issue with that and the SSD in this computer, but still have the issue. The macbook pro is connected to a cinema display most of the time and it occures more frequently when I connect/disconnect the cinema display. I also have screensaver/log back in after sleep enabled and im pretty sure this only happens when the "enter password to wake from sleep" is enabled so its obviously some sort of OS issue.

(ps I just installed snow lepard and the issue is still happening).

I can say the same thing. I got my Retina 13 Inch about a month ago and this has been happening for about the last two weeks. I've been home from college so when i'm not using the mbp, i close the lid, which puts it to sleep. Whenever i open it, it lags to the point where it will require a reboot to speed up (on which the boot hangs on a gray screen for about 30sec) or it will take about 20 min to get back to normal. I did install the EFI update that was available this morning, but i don't notice a difference. Is this something worth taking to Apple Store for them to take a look at since my warranty is still fresh and untouched?

I call Apple Care support yesterday (90 days free call), they give me 3 tasks to do before starting any investigation:

- Reset NVRAM (procedure can be find on Apple support website).

- Reset SMC (procedure can be find on Apple support website).

- Reinstall MacOS 10.8.1 from boot menu (procedure can be find on Apple support website). You don't lose any personnal setings of data, you'll just have to réinstall 10.8.2 patch after.

After this step i don't had any sleep problem, but the Macbook is always hoter in sleep mode than in wake mode.

Hope this will help.

This is a known issue with the engineers at Apple.

That's the good news.

The bad news:

It is a problem that is "baked in" if you will--at the factory assembly level.

It is similar to an issue with a previous model of MBP's a few years back that had bad NVIDIA chipset. Adjustments had to be made at the factory assembly level to fix that issue.

Same here. Your only solution is to get a completely newly built replacement right off the production line--where "adjustments" have been made.

Fortunately for those of us who custom ordered their original machine, this will be automatic, but for those with "standard" configurations, you will need to be certain that any replacement is newly built at the factory, not from the warehouse.

My 15" Retina MBP is probably one of the first units that were built, because I ordered it right after it was released. I don't have any sleep-related problems whatsoever, so I doubt this is a hardware issue affecting all units up to a certain production date or revision. If this was the case, my MBP would have to be affected, too.

I had my custom built 15" replaced with a new 13" in early December. I worked a deal with the Apple Store and they were very responsive. However, the 13" has the same issue. After a certain period of time, I wake up the display to see a dialog box for my login, but there is no response to mouse, cursor or keyboard. I have to shutdown and restart. Nothing is connected to the laptop except occasionally the Apple USB keyboard.

It doesn't seem to happen (or perhaps less frequently-can't remember) if I select the log off option rather than just letting it go to sleep. Also, I haven't stored it in my laptop bag in sleep mode. After the extreme overheating-while-asleep problem I had with the 15", I'm afraid to put it in the bag unless it's turned off.

Are you suggesting that Apple would replace this laptop with a new one?

The same thing happens to my 13" all the time. If it goes to sleep it lags, if its charging it lags, sometimes just turning it on lags. I have nothing plugged into it at all...ever. I'm guessing one option would be to just get a replacement and see if that fixes any issues. Might actually do that today along with my iPhone 4S that no longer wants to fully charge.

Potential success--finally--but guardedly optimistic.

I've been dealing with this wake-from-sleep problem for some time--the long delay after opening up my "sleeping" 15-inch "Retina" MacBook Pro, along with a black screen for almost 10-seconds, before my log-in dialog screen finally appeared.

Up to now none of the "tinkering" seemed to have helped, and per a conversation I had with a senior AppleCare tech, my understanding was that the problem was only going to be corrected at the factory level where an adjusted chipset could be implemented into the build/assembly phase.

In another thread there has been a lot of "voodoo" running Terminal commands, which also had not brought success.

Out of morbid curiosity or plain blind optimism, I decided to research an official Apple developer page offered up by another contributor on the other thread that explained the various Terminal commands as far as power management. I came up with a last-ditch effort and assembled several Terminal commands.

These were the Terminal commands I ran and in this order:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0

sudo pmset -a autopoweroffdelay 36000

sudo pmset -a standby 0

sudo pmset -a standbydelay 36000

sudo pmset -a acwake 0

Then I closed the lid to my MBPr around midnight last night and un-plugged it. Around 6AM this morning (5-plus hours later), I woke up, opened the MBPr and it instantly went right to my user-password log-in dialog--no delay or dark screen.

I'll be curious now to see if others, likewise vexed for so long with this issue, have similar success, and am further hopeful that the settings "stick" beyond any expected OS or other future updates.

I will update my own experience in a couple days, success or failure—hopefully success.

Good luck.

Note: The 36000 in the Terminal commands represents 10-hours in seconds. For me that will work as I am never not on my MBPr more than 5-8 hours at any one time, and if so, I don't mind hibernation mode setting in to save battery power.

Day 2 and success, this time with 6-hours of sleep followed by instant wake-up.

The 6 Terminal commands set I assembled together (see my last post) seems to have worked--for me at least. If you decide to apply them, I strongly suggest you apply all 6 of them and in that order.

If day 3 (tonight) brings success as well, I'll follow-up post one last time.

My only "huh" comes from wondering why, with all the brainpower at Apple, how they couldn't come up with this.
