why has snow leopard been removed for download

I don't get Apple - they release a new OSx that can only be updated from Snow Leopard but in their amazing commercial wisdom remove the ability to buy Snow Leopard. That will increase the uptake of Mountain Lion - NOT! Anyway does anyone know how I can legally upgrade to Snow Leopard now? Thanks Apple always useful - your redundancy policy completely ***.

Well, I agree, especially for those who just want it in order to upgrade to ML it would make sense to make it available both as a DL and DVD. Myself, I prefer the DVD way, since I'm not ready right now for a 15 hour download with my slow DSL that will probably get corrupted in transit. (I'm also in no hurry to upgrade from Snow.)

I also prefer to have the physical media around for later use. (Of course, when I'm ready I'll stick the dmg on a flash drive.) Btw, Snow is only $20, down from $30, here. ebay or Amazon will probably be a rip off.

But why Apple can''t integrate Snow Leopard into the download-purchase of Mountain Lion is just baffling.

The rationale is you need the App Store to buy it and that's only available from Snow. Whether it's just not possible for them to integrate the App Store or something like it directly into the ML purchase, or it's that Snow is a money maker, I don't know. And, you'd need the App Store in order to DL and buy Snow.

I could but why would not just buy the disk from some poor person on Ebay when Apple goes out of their way to be annoying. I'm not really in a hurry to upgrade.

Actually I never know where my physical credit cards are because I do everything online and usually the batteries in my phone are dead when I decide I want to something like upgrade. All my purchase and CC info is actually on record here at Apple so it wouldn't big deal to download the newest operating system.

I hate calling because I waste a lot of time on hold and finding the correct contact number. I spent probably 20-30 minutes on Google and Apple trying to figure out how to upgrade the operating system before I arrived at this site.

Apple doesn't think these things out. Here's the place this information (phone number) about contacting Apple to get the Snow Leopard software should have gone.

Look at this:

User uploaded file

There’s no need to visit a store, bring home a box, and install a bunch of discs.Oh right! yeah- sure!!! Just click the Mac App Store icon on your Mac. Buy OS X Mountain Lion. And your Mac does the rest. Follow these steps to begin your upgrade.

Step 2:

Make sure you have Lion or the latest version of Snow Leopard.

While you have the About This Mac window open, check what version of OS X your Mac is running.

If you are running Lion (10.7.x), you’re ready to update to Mountain Lion. Go to Step 3. If you are running Snow Leopard (10.6.x), update to the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard before you purchase OS X Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store. Click the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version. And if you are running anything before OSX10.6, you can go to the Devil because you are not upgrading often enough and paying us money on a regular basis. So if you are looking to buy Snow Leopard here, tough luck Buddy!

Thanks Wzzz- you are fun to talk to. I'm looking at the $10-$20 SL disks on Ebay- Amazon was horribly expensive!!

If Apple can build a imac, they can make certainly make 2 downloads availble in their checkout and they can even charge more if users didn't upgrade earlier to SL. And I doubt that it would annoy anyone.

Minor petty things like this really annoy consumers because it shows a lack of thoughtfulness toward your customers.

Where;'s HERE? As others have noted, numerous times, Apple's online sales gets you SL and Lion. For outside the US, try one of the numbers listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57.

I agree that Apple's new delivery system S*****KS and firmly think it wastes resources, bandwidth, time, and electricity for obnoxiously large files (3.5+GB), it's the new, but crappy way of doing things in the iOS toy world. Music, chat, socialize, etc. What's really maddening is that Apple has billions under their mattresses, but can't provide DVDs with the OS for those not lucky to have high-speed, uncapped Internet access or immediate access to one of their stores or the moola to buy their latest offerings. Mobile things w/o superdrives.
