Mac Mail 6 is missing the "spinning wheel" indicator when checking for new mail

Before updating to Maountain Lion, when cheking for new mail in Mail, there was a little indicator ("spinning wheel") next to the Inbox to confirm it was actually working.

Since updating to Mountain Lion, the indicator isn't there. It's not that much of a big deal if it doesn't exist anymore, but it was good to have, and if it's just a setting I need to turn back on, then that would be cool, if I could find it 🙂

I don't know what the sleep light is/was but using the links I have put 5 posts above you can do that. 🙂

The sleep light was slowly pulsing white light at the front of the iMac case which was a brilliant analog to the slow, relaxed breathing rhythm of someone sleeping. It was removed beginning with the aluminum Intel iMacs. Now the only way you can know if the computer is sleeping or not is a) in 10.6 gently slide the mouse to the side without pushing down on it--if it doesn't wake the screen, then you know the computer is sleeping, and b) in 10.7 and up (although I've only done this in 10.8) in Bluetooth>Advanced in Sys Prefs, uncheck Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer. If when you press down on the Mouse button (using a Bluetooth mouse), the screen doesn't wake up, it means the computer is sleeping.

In fact, you can't even know if the computer is powered on or not. For that, I have a USB hub with an LED that lights up only when the computer is powered on.

Now you know everything.

Thanks for sleeping information. I have an alluminium iMac but it has a sleep mode on the rear button and on the Apple menu on the toolbar although, it does not work as easily on the rear button now as Mavericks messed it up by over-complicating it. Apple are really groovy....when something works really well they mess with it, just like the missing spining cog wheel. 🙂

Surely Apple do read the support forums occasionally?
They'd be daft not to.

Came here looking for a solution to missing spinner while Search is going on in Mavericks.
I'm never sure whether my Mac's actually doing something or has just locked me out of the keyboard again, lol.

Love the thread though guys, especially the way Barney gets busted and just refuses to deal with it 🙂

Good spat.

Maybe they do, maybe they don't, officially they don't. But they do provide a mechanism by which end users can supply feedback to Apple regarding changes, new features etc. Millions use it for the purpose it was intended.

Contrary to my earlier post above I have found out since that Apple do monitor and see everything on the support forums as, they have told me that they do so. The problem is that there is so much to fix and put right because, more and more product keeps coming out and they cannot keep up. It's their choice and unfortunately the situation is getting worse as time moves along.

Rushing things out without adequate beta testing creates ever more to fix. Add to that this is an OS that covers phones/iPads/Desktops and you have the potential for increasing problems. It's a new world but whether its brave I'm not sure. I just want my computer to work properly and not to have to use up a lot of time rectifying other people's lack of diligence. If you bought a car and it had this many problems would you be praising the manufacturer?

Removing features from Apps that people use and like is not a good move. Giving people the choice to turn things off is a far better way to deal with things. With Mavericks it has been a lot of work turning things back on except where they have been totally removed, like the spinning cog and the normal counter in the Mail App. When I have upgraded before I may have had to alter one or two items but with Mavericks it has been non-stop.

But don't you realize that the spinning cog when Mail was searching was old-fashioned, clunky and uncool? The new design aesthetic is, "if it works and is useful, remove it." Not to mention, make all buttons so low contrast you can barely tell one from another, and put them all against a grey background into which they can completely blend and become almost invisible.

For my money, and in the hopelessly lost cause department, I'd first be trying to get the pulsing sleep light back.

Good points. Apple have their heads in the sand and actually believe that they are right. It's pretty sad. I predict a big backlash in the not too distant future. You cannot be this inflexible and gain browny points as it's against nature. It reminds me of the late great comedian Murray Roman's second album ,'You can't beat people up and have them say I love you'. 🙂
