Mac Mail 6 is missing the "spinning wheel" indicator when checking for new mail

Before updating to Maountain Lion, when cheking for new mail in Mail, there was a little indicator ("spinning wheel") next to the Inbox to confirm it was actually working.

Since updating to Mountain Lion, the indicator isn't there. It's not that much of a big deal if it doesn't exist anymore, but it was good to have, and if it's just a setting I need to turn back on, then that would be cool, if I could find it 🙂

well the people that says sppining wheel is not neccesary is because for them is not necessary, maybe because they have only one email account... apple forgot to put a selection box... but i'm still missing the wheels and i need it...

did you note that all the new updates from lion-today forgot apple rules? apple if you want to make improvements do not remove any old improvements... do you want to come like MS Me? lol

Can't help thinking that if Steve was still about he'd not have let this happen. It's a visual cue/ representation for an interaction between a single computer in dialogue with Servers.

This was his vision for gaaaads sake; independance hotwired to unbelievably powerful facilities. The bare minimum is that we (the user) get to see when they're talking to each other.

Also, it's just plain bleeding annoying that I can't see which of my 10 email addresses have even managed to contact/ download/ whatever/

Come on Apple - just put it back in 10.8.4

Thank you

This is just rediculous! Same annoyance here.

I am a long time Apple user, dating back to my Apple ][+ in 1978. I have never posted a message on this board before. Most of the time, I just live with Apple's changes, even if I don't like them. But this elimination of the spinning wheel in getting mail is just intolerable. I get email from 9 different email accounts on over 3 different servers. And, my connection is not always the fastest. It may not be dial up, but sometimes I wonder...

Anyway, I can't just get email and know that I am getting it. I can bring up the activity window which helps some. But it takes up space and doesn't show anything when it is trying to get email, only when it is downloading them. Also, once it finishes downloading email, the window goes blank but MAIL is still "talking" with the servers (deleting messages I guess).

I use to get on my computer (MacBook Pro), check email, then close it. But now, I have to check email and go do something else, coming back much later to insure that I am not trying to shut it down prematurely. It is at least nice that MAIL does "chime" when it is done. But unless I want to sit there and wait for it, hoping to hear it when it does occur, it doesn't help a whole lot.

I think Apple, and the rest of the computer industry, is heading down a path where users don't need to know anything about computers to use them. For desktops, maybe it is ok to leave MAIL open and have it automatically check, but not for laptops. Maybe they figured that users may be asking what the little spinning thing is. So by deleting it, they don't have to worry. But for me, and everyone who has responded to this, it is a big deal. They should have added it as an option that could be turned on for us people who rely on it.

The only thing I can think of why it hasn't been corrected is that:

1) They don't care because we (the people complaining) are a minority

2) For some reason they can't, at least easily [maybe they will bring it back in 10.9]

3) It takes too much time to spin the little guy and they are trying to save time where they can (because of the other added features that take more time)

I suspect that the answer may be #3.

I don't want to drag on, but I hope Apple does bring the spinning icon back, or at least something like it.

Just a heads up on this:

If you repeatedly click the "get mail" button because you are trying to figure out if mail is "working" or not, there is a chance your ISP mail server rules could eventually black list you for "too many failed connection attempts" from your IP within a short time frame. (Pretty standard rule, I guess)

Found this out recently... Fortunately my ISP was kind enough to "white list" me to preven this from happening. (with a growing child in the house, our email activity is increasing ever so much...)

Anyway, hope Apple brings this back.
