This is just rediculous! Same annoyance here.
I am a long time Apple user, dating back to my Apple ][+ in 1978. I have never posted a message on this board before. Most of the time, I just live with Apple's changes, even if I don't like them. But this elimination of the spinning wheel in getting mail is just intolerable. I get email from 9 different email accounts on over 3 different servers. And, my connection is not always the fastest. It may not be dial up, but sometimes I wonder...
Anyway, I can't just get email and know that I am getting it. I can bring up the activity window which helps some. But it takes up space and doesn't show anything when it is trying to get email, only when it is downloading them. Also, once it finishes downloading email, the window goes blank but MAIL is still "talking" with the servers (deleting messages I guess).
I use to get on my computer (MacBook Pro), check email, then close it. But now, I have to check email and go do something else, coming back much later to insure that I am not trying to shut it down prematurely. It is at least nice that MAIL does "chime" when it is done. But unless I want to sit there and wait for it, hoping to hear it when it does occur, it doesn't help a whole lot.
I think Apple, and the rest of the computer industry, is heading down a path where users don't need to know anything about computers to use them. For desktops, maybe it is ok to leave MAIL open and have it automatically check, but not for laptops. Maybe they figured that users may be asking what the little spinning thing is. So by deleting it, they don't have to worry. But for me, and everyone who has responded to this, it is a big deal. They should have added it as an option that could be turned on for us people who rely on it.
The only thing I can think of why it hasn't been corrected is that:
1) They don't care because we (the people complaining) are a minority
2) For some reason they can't, at least easily [maybe they will bring it back in 10.9]
3) It takes too much time to spin the little guy and they are trying to save time where they can (because of the other added features that take more time)
I suspect that the answer may be #3.
I don't want to drag on, but I hope Apple does bring the spinning icon back, or at least something like it.
