I think for now you have to use some other software. If you have wifi, AirDroid is free and does a lot more (also reads and sends SMS messages from the Mac).

- Just search and install AirDroid from Google Play store on the mobile and click start.

- Open a browser on the Mac and go to the address specified on the phone screen (you can bookmark it in the browser).

- Click the small camera icon inside the app (on the phone) and point the phone camera at the Mac screen.

The camera recognizes and reads the large dotty icon, and automatically connects the two.

It is very quick and handy. You will see messages, videos, pictures.. all the contents of the phone (even the clipboard if you want to do copy-paste between Mac and phone).

If you are an advanced user you can also setup Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/ free for Mac Os) to create a web App for the mac that opens AidDroid. Just tell Fluid to open any link inside its panels in the preferences, type the AirDroid address in the "URL" field and you can even add an icon (you can download it from the Play Store web page of AirDroid, just drag the icon to the desktop and choose it in Fluid preferences).

Oh, and you can also setup the Mac to open the newly created Fluid app for AirDroid every time the phone is connected. You can do it inside Apple's Image Capture application. In the bottom left corner of the window (when device is connected) there is a small "triangle in a box" icon tht shows/hides opening preferences for your device. You can choose any app there. Just select "Other.." in the menu and browse to find the application you wish.

I can fix this - Had same problem with Mac OS X, all samsung products have the same problem - tablets and phones, anything with Android system.

I was getting the error 10 as well, and as a developer of Android apps I was getting crazy. Reinstalled Kies, hoping for the driver update, no help, used MTP, could not connect, use camera couldn't connect. EASY EASY SOLUTION! And it's more awesome than when I used to have Mass Device support under USB (Because this option locks out the apps from using the storage card when it is controlled by the PC or Mac's USB).

Run FileZilla in Mac (or any free FTP software), run SwiftFTP on the Android. Swift FTP is a ftp server which runs on your phone. It can be started and stopped. Under Wi-Fi, I was able to move files up and down, right to the root of the phone. Rooted or unrooted, no problem (obviously you get one level lower if you are rooted.).... Look for the card under /storage/sdcard0, and look for the external card in /storage/extSdcard01 so easy and so elegant. The cool thing is that you actually see the apps grabbing on to the files! As I'm downloading 20 gig of music to my external card, I see the Music app populating it. And as previously stated better than a cable because you aren't locking out the storage cards from the device.

Just tried to do the connection to MAC running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and was experiencing the same issues in this thread however I do not have Kies installed any longer because I got rid of my Samsung devices. So I recommend uninstalling Kies and using Android File Transfer. The trick for me was to turn off the wireless network on the phone before plugging in the USB cable. Prior to that I was plugging in the USB cable numerous times and got the connection errors as experienced in this thread. Once I disabled wireless everything worked smoothly, tested on two Nexus 4 phones no prob.

I had the same issue. I finally got the Android File Transfer app to work and recognize the device by switching the phone from "Media device (MTP)" to "Camera (PTP)".

The way you do this is the same as how you would normally connect the sd card -- from the pulldown notifications on the Samsung Galaxy S3, you have the USB options.

I saw someone else had USB debugging on -- might need to switch that off too.

Guys, I found a user who found a fix to this issue.

Running MB Air 11" Mid 2011 and OX10.8.2. Can't get MTP or Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 on ICS 4.0.4

If you don't have the latest version of Samsung Kies for Mac, download and install it. If you do have it installed, update it. Mine is now 2.0.0.X.

Unfortunately, whicle you still cannot connect your device to Kies, reinstall the driver via Tools > Install driver.

Android MTP mode will now work and if you fired up Android File Transfer, you can now access the phone.

I think the Jellybean update will fix this but we're still sadly waiting for some telcos to roll them out in Australia!

Hi guys,

I'm using a Samsung GSIII (JB 4.1.1) and Mountain Lion and this solved my problem:

1 - Downloaded Kies for Mac (KiesMac_2.0.0.12095_7_1)

2 - Instead of installing, I hit the Uninstall icon to completely remove previous Kies version (I've tried previously to remove it using TrashMe but looks like it didn't remove all the files)

3 - Connected my phone using the usb cable, with MTP option and Android File Transfer started working correctly

It's also working with my GT-P7500 tablet.

Hope this can fix your problem as well.

Brilliant key2007!

I have a rMBP with Mtn Lion 10.8.2 and a new AT&T Galaxy Note II (with Android 4.1.1 on it). For the life of me I could never get Android File Transfer to work (like everyone else). I Uninstalled Kies and re-installed AFT (without removing any prior AFT files, I just trashed the app) and voilé! Works perfectly.

I did run a test and re-installed the latest version of Kies and AFT once again would not work.

I really don't need Kies as I am using SyncMate which works OK but also where I haven't been able to setup their version of USB Transfer via MTP to be able to view my MicroSD card. Well guess what? Uninstalling Kies fixed the Syncmate problem as well! You just have to make sure that you have closed the Android File Transfer app then Syncmate will work and mount your device and the MicroSD card! Woohoo!

Once again, Thank You key2007!

Short answer: Download 'Airdroid' app onto your phone. This should prevent re-occurrences caused by updated mac osd or android firmware.

The solution is in more detail below.

Hope it helps

Regards

Tim

I'm late to this thread but I've had this problem repeat itself with changing osd and with android firmware updates. There is a free Android App in PlayStore called, 'AirDroid'. I found the basic version brilliant and intend to buy the pro version in gratitude. It allows wireless control/connection with your phone and phone files.

Procedure

Download the app, create an account and sign in.

Airdroid will open on your phone with instructions to open http//web.airdroid.com on the Mac/pc. Here on this site, on your Mac, you can sign-in or more simply scan the displayed 'QR' symbol with your phone by pressing 'scan QR'. The page will then change to a file tree view of your phone.

This will enable up/down loading of files/pics/videos, texting... view contact listings, remote find phone with gps, change lock codes, wipe phone....

Google™ offers a free Android File Transfer application, available fromwww.android.com/filetransfer, with installation instructions.

Important! You must uninstall Kies for Mac before running Android File Transfer. Otherwise, the application will not connect to your device.

Note: If you are using Mountain Lion OS X 10.8, you will need to Control-click or right-click on the icon for Uninstall and click Open. Click Open again to grant access.

  1. To uninstall Kies, download the Kies for Mac software by visiting the Kies website.
  2. From Finder, click Go > Downloads > KiesMac_xxxx.dmg > Uninstall.

After installing Android File Transfer, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your device to your Mac using the supplied USB cable.
  2. Open Android File Transfer on your Mac. Your device should connect automatically and display the contents of your device and optional memory card. You may need to change the USB settings if you cannot connect; swipe your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom to open the Notification Panel and touch Connected as a camera. Touch Media device (MTP) to change the USB settings. The Notification Panel should show Connected as a media device.
  3. Navigate to the appropriate folder containing your music on the Mac.
  4. Select a file or highlight all. Drag and drop the files to your music folder on your device or optional memory card.
  5. The selected music files will now be on your device. Open the Music Player on your device to begin playback.

Not criticizing you, Matthew. But it's very likely that it is Mavericks, not anything Google did.

For others who might come to this forum, let me summarize a few things, so that people won't keep repeating the same "solutions" over and over again.

1) This problem has been happening on many different devices since the Mavericks update to 10.9.0. It is not unique to the Galaxy, or Samsung phones, or the like. Although different phones may be having different problems. My phone is a Motorola Droid RAZR HD, and it was working JUST FINE until the Mavericks update. If your phone is having problems with a different version of OS X, try some of the simple things below.

2) Anybody having this problem should first go into their USB settings and make sure that the USB mode is "MTP". Also make sure that USB debugging is off in Developer Options if you have that enabled. A few people have reported that it ONLY works for them when USB debugging is enabled, but they seem to be a rare few.

3) If you have a Samsung phone with KIES installed, what you should do is download the KIES installer, and use it to UNinstall KIES. People have reported that simply deleting the app doesn't work. Be sure to restart after uninstalling KIES.

4) If neither of those work for you, you can use Airdroid or another alternative to transfer files via WiFi. (There are actually many apps that do this, and I prefer some of the others over Airdroid. But you also need to be pretty network savvy to use some of them.)

5) HOWEVER... and this is an important point: for the rest of us, this problem is still there and hasn't been fixed. And we DO want it fixed, because WiFi is very slow compared to USB transfer, and quite a few other issues. And yes, for most of those people it IS a problem with OS X Mavericks. I know because there is a workaround for some phones. But you may not like it:

Connect your phone using USB. (As usual, make sure the mode is "MTP".) Open Network Preferences. You should see your phone showing in the list of devices, even if you're not communicating with it.

If so, then restart the computer with your phone connected. (Some people say they have to uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in" for this to work.)

Once you restart, Android File Transfer should start and you are connected! But be warned that if you unplug the phone, Android File Transfer will stop working until you plug back in and restart the computer!

So for many people, WiFi transfer is the only practical option.

But this is why I say: except for those people who can fix this with the simple solutions above, the problem for the rest of us *IS* a problem in OS X Mavericks. If it weren't, this workaround would not connect you.

6) And last but not least, the solution at the following link has worked for many people,

http://trjlive.com/2013/10/guide-android-file-transfer-mac-osx-mavericks/

But it doesn't work with my phone, and may not work with yours. I'm still waiting for Apple to fix this, and I am very angry that they haven't. It is unconscionable that this is not fixed after at least 4 months of continued problems and complaints.

Hello All,

I don't know if this was mentioned before and may seem really obvious but have you gone into the "Preferences" folder and deleted any Kies-related .PLIST files (such as com.samsung.Kies.plist)? This .PLIST still remains even after you use the Uninstaller.

The Preferences folder is located here:

Macintosh HD > Users > [Your "Username" folder] > Library > Preferences

I always delete the Trash afterwards too.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (and had a SGN 2) and they both work with AFT. Kies must NOT Be Installed at the same time as many others have mentioned. AFT just won't work. Both have worked with Lion/Mtn Lion and Mavericks (I'm on Ver. 10.9.2 now).

Whenever I have issues with any apps I always go to the Prefs folder and do the deletions. The Prefs get rebuilt when you still have the app but for other apps the .PLIST can contain serial numbers and the such that you enter when first installing (for those paid apps). Maybe this works only because I have a Galaxy Note 3 but is worth a try!

Do not need Filezilla or anny app in your mac (keep your mac clean), just input the ftp url in Safari and after connect it will change to finder folder.

Ftp Server for android device @ Google play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserver

1- install the app in your android device

2- At config choose connection type eg: Wifi, Mobile data...etc

3- config settings to allow anonymous connections / set the root folder (internal or external memory, bouth works).

4- At your mac start safari and in the url field input ftp://000.000.0.0:0000 (change the zeros to your ip adress - the app will show you what is the correct ip adress.

5- Hit return and choose GUEST, safari will change to finder, you will see your device in your desk as icon of a shared folder.

Thats it. Be happy. Depending on your wifi configuration it will be faster than usb data tranfer.
