I have to Disagree with you because :

I have the same problem with a new Macbook Air 11" with Lion installed.
Instead, with my MacBook Pro 13" (Unibody 2009) and Mountain Lion installed I have no problem.
I tried to use the installer on the Air by copying it from the Macbook Pro, but no way... The MacBook Air seems not recognize the key...
I have the same problem with the E3131 and a 2012 13'' MBP running OSX 10.8.
Turns out, if you look in System Information, that the device doesn't even seem to be present on the USB bus (according to the OS at least); this is weird, because the stick's status led blinks green twice every 3s (which, according to the manual, it means that the stick is powered by the usb).
I have no idea what's going on here...

Did you install the DVD that came with it?

Hi I din't found a solution - but I'ver tested that USB-modem on my Mac Book Pro 15'' (mid 2010 with OsX 10.8.1) and it works fine.
I've seen that modem used a vitual ethernet emulation ethernet3 in network settings. It is a virtual emulation of the physical ethernetport of my Mac Book Pro 15' (mid 2010).
On my new Mac Book Pro Retina it dosen't work!! That is the matter of fact. From my point of view the Mac Book Pro Retina and all MBA doesn't have a physical ethernet adapter maybe that is the problem.
On my best friends MBP 15" (mid 2012) it works. As yopu now that MBP has a ethernet adapter.
KaiBe, I'm really worried after read this.
I live at Brazil and I used to have a Huawei USB working on my older Macbook's Pro Mid 2010 and 2011 but at my new Macbook Retina 2012 it just doesn't work.
Already tried several Drivers, Workarounds from here and there and the Unavailable / Disconnected Message always appears.
I had to Plug Modem at a PC to copy the VIVO INTERNET.app (Provider here is called VIVO) cause at my Macbook it just doesn't Mount it.

Thanks to the USB hub, Now Huawei E303C Datacard is working all fine in my new MacBook Pro 13" i7 Mid 2012 model.
For experiment purpose, I purchased one USB 2.0 hub (Unknown Chinese model).
I connected Datacard to USB hub and USB hub to MacBook Pro USB port.
Hurray!! Datacard is detected by MacBook Pro.
So, the problem is with MacBook Pro's new USB ports (USB 2.0 and 3.0 integrated in a single port) and Huawei E303C Datacard.
It is a hardware support issue with Huawei E303C Datacard.
I hope this will solve your problem too.
I have installed this update, But, still OS is not recognizing my 3G dongle.
I use Huawei E303C Datacard and MacBook Pro 13" i7 Mid 2012 model (With updated Mountain Lion OS).
Now, I use USB 2.0 hub for my Datacard.
I too have the same problem with the modem Huawei E3131 and Mountain Lion OSX, cant get it to work. If I buy a USB hub 2.0 what do I do then? Connect the USB hub to my macbookpro and then install the modem and the modem will then show up on the screen under network?

Connect the Huawei E3131 modem to the USB hub and USB hub to MacBook Pro USB port, Then install the 'Mobile Partner' app.
For Internet connection, you can either use the 'Mobile Partner' app or configure the modem in Network Settings.
Thank you Sandip.
The USB hub 2.0-- would that be powered or unpowered? Once I plug in the modem and the USB hub then what happens on the macbookpro screen? What is "MobilePartner" app? Will that show up somewhere on my screen automatically. Will the modem show up in network settings once the Hub is plugged in? Please pardon all these questions. I have a computer tech I.Q. of minus 6.

I just used an unpowered usb2 hub, then after plugging in my Huawei device, the storage appeared with the connection sw, which I had to install.
So the issue was simply the incompability of the usb3 of the Air.
Better to use an unpowered USB hub because you can take it anywhere with your MacBook pro.
'Mobile Partner' app comes built-in with the Huawei E3131 modem. It is a recommend app by Huawei and it has functionalities like connect/disconnect connection, balance check, make calls, text messages, settings, etc.
You do need to configure anything in network settings.
- Connect modem with MacBook Pro using USB 2.0 hub
- Modem's status light will start blinking in a pattern (Light color can be green (2G) or blue(3G))
- Wait for modem auto detection
- If 'Mobile Partner' app is not installed yet then it will show an installer. The installation process will install the required drivers and configure the Mobile Partner' app as per your inserted SIM in modem.
- If 'Mobile Partner' app is already installed then it will open the app and show the telecom company name as per your inserted SIM in modem.
- Now you are ready to go. đ
