.mts files from newly released Sony NX30

I'm trying to import the .mts files from the new Sony NX30. Using Log and Transfer on FCP 6.0.6, all the files except one transfers fine. Those files are less than 3 minutes. The 44 min. file has an error and won't work.

I tried using mpeg streamclip to access the file and it showed 'unsupported file'.

Searching the discussions, I've seen that Toast (vs9 and later) and VoltaicHD are supposed to convert the AVCHD .mts files. The negative is that Voltaic HD is VERY slow. The post was several years old. Does anyone know if that has improved? Is there a new standard as to how to convert them when the log and transfer doesn't work?

I imported earlier a 33 min. clip via Log and Transfer from the same NX30 and it took about 3 hours, but worked. In the Sony instructions it mentions that the SD card format is a FAT32 and does 2 GB max length files, but it must have combined them somehow because the 33 min file worked.

This new 45 min clip is from a wedding. Really want to have access to it 🙂

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Sharon

Update:

My immediate problem of getting the full clip into FCP is solved.

By using my AJA IoHD I was able to connect from my camera to the AJA via HDMI. After I changed the settings on the AJA control panel to HDMI, I was able to capture through FCP 6.0.6 and get the entire 44 min clip.

What is not solved is how to get around the camera only capturing usable 11 min on a clip. I will give the card to a colleague to see if he has the same problem using a PC and Premiere. I will check out formatting the card differently if possible.

Thanks Shane and Michael for the suggestions.

There is another method to import your sony nx30 wedding videos to fcp 6.0 without log and transfer: just use a mts converter for mac program to convert the sony nx30 avchd videos to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) or Apple ProRes 422 MOV videos, and then import the converted videos to FCP 6.0 for further editing.

Just google search a mts converter mac program which allows you to convert avchd videos to ProRes MOV videos. I use this one recommended by Allan Eckert: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3134078?start=0&tstart=0

If you would like to get high-quality converted files, just choose Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) MOV as output video format and set 1920*1080 as video resolution.

Hope above information could be useful to you.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your reply. I always appreciate any comments as the more info gleaned, the better.

Actually, I tried 3-4 mts converters and they all would convert the 'under 11 minute files', but none would convert the files over 11 minutes (the 2 GB limit).

I finally found 3 ways to import clips that are longer than 11 min. None the 'perfect' way, but at least enough options that I felt comfortable keeping the camcorder as I did like the picture quality.

Here are my results:

Using 10.6.8 and FCP 6.0.6:

Can't log & xfer directly from camera--camera doesn't show on desktop to choose

Converters (clipWrap2, PavTube, forgot names of other ones I tried) won't convert if file longer than 11 min.

**This came from Sony Pro Support and worked--copy file structure to computer. Open Log and Transfer. Although the 'over 11 min clip" won't import, MARK IN AND OUT POINTS UNDER 11 MIN on that long clip and transfer it in portions. That worked. Sony support guy was VERY helpful.**

I have an AJA IoHD. Use the HDMI cable into camera and route through the AJA IoHD, then use FW into the computer to Log and Capture. Is real time, but works and I have it come in as Pro Res.

Using Lion 10.7.4 and FCPX 10.0.5 Trial version

As above, camera doesn't show up on desktop.

Clipwrap2 converter only gets first 11 minutes as above.

Copy file structure from card to computer. FCPX will log and transfer the whole 44 min. clip. I can then immediately export that clip to a useable file, restart in 10.6.8 and edit in FCP 6.0.6 (which I know like the back of my hand).

I appreciate everyone's help. I am marking this solved as I have enough options to keep the camcorder.

Hi, Sharon,

I am very glad to here that you have found the solutions finally.

Meanwhile, it's very useful to share your detailed method with everyone here. 🙂 So we could learn from each other and get the best suitable solution for ourselves.

Forgot to say, I am not an English speaker and sorry for my poor English.

Linda,

Your English is great. I would not have guessed English wasn't your first language.

I have been helped on this list by so many people much more knowledgeable than I who have given their time to help fix other people's video editing problems. Reading solutions other people report does help. It was my simple attempt to try to give back in return.

Thanks for your time to also help me find a solution.
