Airplay Mirroring Lags and Sputters

With Mirroring I have Extreme Lag and Sputtering. Video is unwatcahable as well as any work with it. My set up includes:

  1. Apple TV 2 with high-grade cables (works fine streaming anything native on ATV2 as well as my iPhone 4s)
  2. MBP 15" i7 2.2 GHz with 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD
  3. Time Capsule 2TB with 5 GHz Network enabled
  4. Tried using both built in Mountain Lion Airplay Mirroring as well as AirParrot, both lag pretty bad with AirParrot being better.

There wasn't anything else running on the network and I only was running one-two apps at a time.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion, Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD

alphabeta1977 - I never thought to try this but it worked for me as well. Thanks for the great suggestion! The only compromise I've noticed is that streaming other content on my ATV3 using the 2.4 ghz network results in slightly inferior picture quality. Streaming over the 5 ghz network looks crystal clear (actually better than what I get from regualr HD cable TV).

So, I guess for most ATV viewing I'll connect to 5 ghz but when I want to use Airplay I'll switch to 2.4 ghz. A little inconvenient but certainly workable.

Thanks again!

Sorry to bring back an old thread, and thanks for the suggestion! Interestingly enough, I switched my Mac to the 2.4 GHz network, and left the Apple TV on the 5GHz network, and performance increased substantially. Still sputtering, but nowhere near as bad. Weird thing is, it was working flawlessly a month ago, then one day it just started sputtering everything. No problem between the iPad and the Apple TV.

I HAD THE SAME ISSUE- SPLUTTER WITH STOPPING AND STARTING OF MY STREAM WHEN USING AIRPLAY FROM MACBOOK TO APPLE TV. VERY ANNOYING!!

THE BEST APPROACH TO FIX THIS ISSUE IS:

1. MAKE SURE THE APPLE TV IS ON A 5GHZ NETWORK (SUPPLIED BY AIRPORT EXPRESS/EXTREME).

2. MAKE SURE THAT THE MACBOOK (MAC) IS ON THE SAME 5GHZ NETWORK (SUPPLIED BY AIRPORT EXPRESS/EXTREME).

DOING 1-2 ABOVE MEANS THAT YOU WILL HAVE AT LEAST 150MBS SPEED FOR FILE TRANSFER BETWEEN THE MAC AND THE APPLE TV- DOING SO MEANS NO SPUTTER AND STALLING.

YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHICH NETWORK EACH DEVICE IS ON BY USING THE AIRPORT UTILITY APP. OPEN THE APP. CLICK ON THE AIRPORT EXPRESS ICON WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE ALT BUTTON- CLICK ON THE ARROW NEXT TO THE APPLE TV AND MACBOOK AND YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT NETWORK THEY ARE ON.

IF THE APPLE TV AND THE MACBOOK ARE ON DIFFERENT NETWORKS I.E 802.11n (5GHZ) & 802.11g(2.2GHZ), THEY NEED TO BE ON THE SAME NETWORK THE 5GHZ NETWORK. IF THE APPLE TV IS ON THE 2.2GHZ NETWORK IT WILL BE SLOWER THAN THE 5GHZ MACBOOK NETWORK. THIS RESULTS IN SPLUTTER. A SIMPLE RESET/RESTART OF THE APPLE TV SHOULD DO IT AND IT SHOULD CONNECT AUTOMATICALLY TO THE 5GHZ NETWORK.

THE FIXES ON-LINE RE TURNING BLUETOOTH OFF AND USING A SEPARATE SCREEN DID NOT RESOLVE MY ISSUE. I SPENT SEVERAL HOURS ON LINE ATTEMPTING TO FIX THIS ISSUE.

BUT ITS FIXED NOW AND SO MUCH BETTER.
