MacBook Pro with Retina Display reports there is no connected camera

Curious, for those that are able to get it working after a restart. Have you tried logging off and back on to test instead of a full reset? That seems to do the trick for me, though would still like to know why the camera goes offline to begin with.

I was hoping that the latest firmware update will fix this but no. They did fix computer freezing though. Actually the more anoying thing is when on Skype the camera goes on and off all the time. It goes off for 1-2s every 30-60s. Do you guys also experience that? It will be my first Apple product that will have to go back for repair/replacement.

Same problem here in a recently purchased Macbook Pro Retina. It stopped working and it doesn't fix after rebooting. Hardware or software issue?

Hard to say - is the FaceTime HD camera showing up in System Information (hold down the option key and select System Information from the Apple Menu) under Hardware>USB? If not, then it could be a hardware issue (or, even if it does show up, it could still be a hardware issue).

If I were you, if a SMC reset doesn't do anything, I'd take the computer into your local Apple Store. The camera is supposed to work, period.

Thank you wjosten, your knowledge about my MacBook Pro was excellent. Resetting the System Management Controller got everything working perfectly.

Same issue, tried to reset SMC but it didn't help. Happens after laptop goes to sleep. Reboot solves.

Same issue, but a bit different. My camera can work normally at the beginning with Skype (I do not know about whether the Facetime built in camera is in the System Information or not though). However, last night, my girlfriend said that I can use facetime on macbook since her iphone 4s has it, so I decided to turn FaceTime on, and then **pang**, nothing works anymore. There is no FaceTime built in camera in System Info atm, no working after rebooting .. I just bought this macbook 1 week ago. Should I return it to the store, or keep waiting for the firmware updating from Apple ? This is my first Macbook and things are getting annoying now 😟

ok. It works now (for god 's sake). I just check the System Report, FaceTime Built In Camera appears again ( last time it wasn't there). The way to resolve it (i think) is shutting down the system, unplugging the power for around 5 minutes, plugging the power in and then starting the system. I opened Face Time right after the system boot and the camera started to work. Not sure whether problem would happen again or not when I open Skype and FaceTime at the same time. But, yup, there is a clear solution working here at least 😀

Update: Reseting only does not work. I reseted my mac several times already. You need to completely turn off your mac and the power.

Btw, I am kinda satisfied with this mac retina 13 inch. After a long time playing / working with Linux, I finally have a system that can balance between the work and entertainment. Good work, Apple (though I still have Ubuntu in my heart 😀)

This is really starting to get annoying. What kinda of support is Apple offering where users are expected to restart their computers every time just to get the camera working. What's even more pathetic is that 3rd party apps (Skype) still work without a restart! So a company that builds the hardware AND software still can't get it working right.

I am getting the same problem. Quite frustrating, as I have a brand-new macbookpro with retina, purchased specifically for my foreign trips...which I am on now. I can't use facetime, same old message. I want to be able to chat with video with my children, but "there is no connected camera". Reboots, SMC resets usually don't work. No application with the camera works, and it does not appear in my system information (under USB, no information regarding isight/facetime camera, etc.). The slipshod solution proferred by Apple is beneath the customer support that I expect for such a premium brand. I own 7 Apple products and this problem does not auger well for future purchases.

Please fix the problem permanently Apple. Please.

Contact your retailer and ask for his help. He can either help you determine how to make it work properly or decided whether your new Mac needs service or perhaps even replacement.

Mac OSX 10.8.3

I have Mackbook Pro retina 15" (OS X 10.10.2) and experiencing the same problem, luckily it is software issue and this guide helped me every time.
