Since the upgrade, my computer is crashing all the time

Hello everybody,

I did the mountain lion upgrade a few days ago, and since then, I have a few crashes a day.

Does anyone suffer from the same issue? How do I resolve this?

Never had this issue before, and now it seems that It's something that will not solve itself..

What happens is that all of a sudden, I am getting a black screen, and everything is shut down.

Then I'm getting a gray screen saying that there was an error and that my computer is restarting.

Like I said, it happens now a few times a day.

VERY ANNOYING!!

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help guys!!

It looks like you may have already started the process of doing a clean reinstall, but just so you know, you still had bits of both Parallels and VirtualBox installed. From your kernel panic log:

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 7.0 15104.778994

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp 3.1.6

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt 3.1.6

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB 3.1.6

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv 3.1.6

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 15104.778994

Whether those were causing your problem, I don't know.

If you're doing a clean reinstall, the problem has become moot. However, for the future, Parallels can be uninstalled completely using the uninstaller on the original disk (if you bought it on disk) or in the .dmg file if you downloaded it.

User uploaded file

If you downloaded it, but no longer have the .dmg file, you would have to re-download to get the uninstaller.

As for VirtualBox, I did install it at some point and wasn't able to use it for what I wanted, so I removed it. Unfortunately, I don't remember how that was done. I imagine there must be an uninstaller, though, probably packaged with the installer similarly to how it's done for Parallels.

hello everybody,

Didn't mean to create such a mess.

But here I am... still here.. just had another crash.

After the clean installation.

What next?

Any idea?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

By the crash report it seems that I still have some leftovers from the softwares I removed.

Maybe I should totally remove them?

Waiting for instructions.

Thanks for all the help :-)

Enclosed is the crash report:

Apparently, you have not uninstalled Virtual Box and Parallels. If you are unwilling to do that, then you need to boot into Safe Mode to see if that fixes the panic problems.

If safe mode fixes things then you need to uninstall the VM software then reinstall only one of them. There's no reason to be running both.

If safe mode doesn't help then create a new user account. Log out of your account and into the new account. Do the panics stop?

Jul 31, 2012 12:13 PM in response to popole77

Didn't mean to create such a mess.

If you're referring to the nastiness that keeps getting removed by the moderators, not to worry, none of that is your doing. 🙂

But here I am... still here.. just had another crash.

After the clean installation.

Well, there's a problem... Either the installation wasn't actually clean (meaning erasing the hard drive and reinstalling from scratch), or you used Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to move too much from the backups to the new system, dirtying it in the process. I say this because your kernel panic log still contains the following:

loaded kexts:

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp 3.1.6

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt 3.1.6

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 15104.778994

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB 3.1.6

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 7.0 15104.778994

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv 3.1.6

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 15104.778994

So that means that all the Parallels and VirtualBox kernel extensions are still installed.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! 😟 But is the system working well enough now that you could run the VirtualBox and Parallels uninstallers?

Jul 31, 2012 1:04 PM in response to popole77

I just went to the VirtualBox site, and I see that the version you're using is more than 2 years old! That may very well be the culprit. I downloaded version 3.1.6 for myself from the following link:

http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.1.6/VirtualBox-3.1.6-59351-OSX.dmg

Inside that disk image is a file called VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool. You would need to open that script, which will run it in the Terminal, to uninstall VirtualBox. Note that it will complain about the app being made by an unregistered developer... you will need to go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> General and temporarily toggle the application control from the default "Mac App Store and identified developers" to "Anywhere." After uninstalling, switch that setting back to where it was.

Since the upgrade, my computer is crashing all the time
