Mountain Lion damaged my hard disk

I tried installing ML in my iMac running Snow Leopard, and I also got the hard disk damage problem.

It seems some people that were running Lion have been able to run de Disk Utility booting from the Recover Partition, which is not featured in Snow Leopard.

I also saw people suggesting to use Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro to recover the disk, but haven't heard of any positive feedback and I am not paying to solve a problem I did not create.

This seems like a major bug in Mountain Lion so far being ignored by Apple. I have heard of people taking their computers to technical support and the people at Apple suggesting to replace the hard disk, which is a pretty convenient solution, since they are not the ones losing their files.

If the installation of ML not even started, how come I cannot switch back to my status quo and boot normally in my Snow Leopard? I am really disappointed about this situation and I would like to hear from people who were able to recover their computers from Snow Leopard, especially people at Apple that seem to be silent about this problem so far.

sorry to be so late to the discussion ,but this one is a big issue for me right now

I have just come from the Apple Store again. (I can attest to the DMV attitudes, btw--hear me out).

My late 2009 iMac was working beautifully with Snow Leopard. No problems. Because I kept getting email about the recall on the Seagate Hard drives, that they were being recalled becuase they have had a statitsically higher rate of failure than Apple deemed normal.Okay, fine.I took it in, almost begrudgingly because honestly the 27-inch imac is not like packing up a Macbook or an ipad. Takign that thing into the Apple Store is a major undertaking. Well, they told me that as long as I had all of my data backed up with a recent Time Machine back up, everything would be there, and that I was being "proactive" by replacing the hard drive.

How wrong they were, and how I wish I'd just taken my chances with the old Seagate hard drive, because while everything was fine before, everything has been completely messed up since then.

From the beginning, while installing my Time Machine back up, I noticed that the fan ran continously. This is all over these discussion boards, the issue of the fan running continuously with the ML upgrade.

There have been all kinds of problems, including iPhoto not working, and of course, losing programs that requirede Snow Leopard to work. These are programs that I use, I might add,and that I would never, ever have consented to losing just to keep up wtih the Jonses/Apples and have the latest OS. Had they asked me, I would have told them NO.

Well, after many calls both to Apple to privately paid technicians (at significant expense to me), I was told that "this is a hardware problem." So, I took it back to the Apple Store and just returned home.

They ran a hard drive diagnostic and said that YES, there is something wrong with the hard drive. Remember now, this was a brand new hard drive, and having that hard drive replaced was the only reason my machine was even updated to ML.

So yes, ML does and/or can cause a hard drive to fail. Whether this happens with computers fresh off the assembly lines or only on computers upgrading from previous operating systems, I could not tell you. W hat I can tell you is that when they upgraded me from SL to Mountai Lion, my hard drive malfunctioned and has been ever since.

They are going to try to reinstall Snow Leopard and check a wire that they suspect is not attached properly to the new hard drive. And the DMV attitudes were that they are doing this for me out of generosity. Sorry, but that's just nuts. I am not the one who asked for my OS to be upgraded; they did that without asking, and it appears they damaged a brand new hard drive.

So it DOES happen.
