Hi. I posted a while ago in this thread. My Mac had been freezing every day since I'd upgraded from Lion. I may be writing too soon, but my Mac has not frozen in three days.

I called Apple at the end of last week to tell them that the freezing was still happening with 10.8.1 and I lucked out and got a woman who is supposedly higher up than the normal tech person.

She emailed a program to me that extracts all the info on my Mac regarding the crashes. I then emailed the data back to her. She said maybe the freezing was partially due to something else not working -- maybe something that might have been corrupted previous to upgrading to Mountain Lion. She's been trying to troubleshoot what that might be. She called me on Monday and she's going to call me again on Friday. It's really the best tech support I've ever gotten, and it's kind of ridiculous considering Mountain Lion cost $19.99. (My Mac's warrantly expired in 2010). It's another reason I'm glad I bought a Mac.

Anyway, she noticed that my Lexmark printer software was going nuts. Apparently, there are some Lexmark processes going on in the background even when the printer isn't in use. She said the extracted info showed that the Lexmark software was constantly quitting and restarting. I tried seeing this activity myself in Activity Monitor, but Activity Monitor doesn't seem to show it.

So, my Mac has not frozen for three days and I've been using it regularly. But, I realized that I haven't had my printer connected to my Mac during that time. Maybe that's just a coincidence and if my Mac does freeze while the printer is disconnected, then I'll post again on here to let people know. But this is the longest period of time I've gone without freezes since I installed Mountain Lion. If it still hasn't frozen in a few days then I'm going to plug in my printer and see what happens.

If you have a Lexmark printer too, you may want to disconnect it and see what happens. Mine is an all-in-one, the S505, which I think is from 2009.

Our situation sounds similar , they also had me email the data back to them , the only issue is that the problems they told me were causing the freezing , weren't the problem . They had advised me that my Norton Anti-virus was the problem and also said that Chrome wasn't up to date and could be the problem , Chrome updates itself constantly . So I updated it anyway , I updated the Norton too . Still freezing , I had suspected that it was the version of Tweetdeck that I was running for , turns out I was right , they were wrong . I uninstalled the version I was using and then reinstalled the current version , no longer freezing .

My recommendation to you is to narrow down which programs are running while the freeze happens , 1 by 1 narrow it down to 1 or 2 programs running while the freeze happens , you'll know which one it is by then . Completely uninstall the program , once you have pinpointed it , restart and then reinstall the program again . Seems that some apps aren't capable of running on ML and others that are capable become corrupted and this process unfortunately has to happen to fix it . I hope me babbling has been helpful , please let me know . -Rob

Okay, unfortunately I did speak too soon. After three and a half days of no freezes, my IMac just froze.

I had left it on all day with Itunes running and came home and it was still running fine. Then after I used it for an hour, it froze. I'm going to talk to Apple again tomorrow and will post again if I learn anything new.

VERY, VERY ANGRY. This is my third OS upgrade and the worst. There is NO excuse for this. Obviously there is nothing wrong with Hardware, it is all the OS problem, and I hope they fix it soon!

I think it is very clear that Apple is fully aware of the problems, it's taking them a long time to get their act together in fixing this OS.

Therefore, there is no point in talking about it anymore until they do fix it, the sooner the BETTER!

I have one solution that worked for me (10.8.1 freezing)

It came down to any situation were mail was running AND another app but that was basically safari.

So pinpointing it to Mail I search for other solutions and found one that works for me: it is solved by removing the recent adresses dB in Mail; I quit mail, removed the file, it was automatocally rebuilt after start up.

You can find the file here:

/Library/Application
Support
/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4
.abcdmr

hope it helps, did for me (sofar, that is 2 days)

It should not be 3rd party apps causing the entire computer to lag all the time, especially when these 3rd party apps are not in use.

Only those specific 3rd party apps should be lagging not the entire computer. Apple has no right to give us this kind of headache. It's flat out WRONG!

Never had this problem with Lion, so why should it be happening with ML? It does not make logical sense. The only real problem is ML not 3rd party apps, unless Apple intended for us to have this kind of problem in the first place.

Not sure what you mean by "Clean Install?" When I installed ML it said "Successfull Install" and that is all it should say!

There should be a solution for all consumers whether they use 3rd party apps or not.

Well, having participated in this thread about 10 pages ago, I'm back from my 3 weeks away and my machine crashed on downloading 10.8.1. So I restarted, continued the download, installed it - and used the machine for the afternoon. A couple of times during the afternoon, I got the spinning beachball, but I was able to Force Quit and it responded to me. So I wondered if perhaps at least that much had been fixed in the update; that it doesn't spread system-wide...

Then it crashed. This time it happened much more slowly, beginning with Address Book. Then Pages. Then, as I struggled to fire up Console to see what was happening, it spread everywhere and I had to restart.

This is such BS. My machine is essentially unusable and to go through every individual suggestion here will take ages...
